#GaneshChaturthi has been quite the affair at our household from as long as I can remember. What started in 1935 as a celebration to mark the birth of my grandfather, has gone on for 84 years. Home-cooked food has remained an integral aspect of these day-long festivities.

The #GaneshChaturthi pooja, amongst other things, involves a #food offering (नैवेद्य/naivedya).

It started with around 5 items in the first year and an item was added every couple of years. This number bumped up to 32 in1985 and has remained the same ever since. 🍛🍚🥗🥘🥗🍲
It was unanimously decided this year, to pull back on the extravagant celebration for a variety of reasons. Hence, I decided to document it. All these items will still be cooked but never again, in unison. 👩‍🍳

1. ಲಾಹಿ ಪಿಟ್ಟೆ ಉಂಡೊ (laayi pitte oondo)

Laddus (sweet balls) made with broken puffed rice, jaggery, cashew nuts, cardamom and black sesame. 🍯
2. ಚುರ್ಮುಂಡೋ (choormoondo)

Laddus (sweet balls) made with wheat flour, sugar, ghee, raisins and cardamom.
3. ತಿಳೆಉಂಡೊ (tille oondo)

Laddus (sweet balls) made with white sesame, jaggery, cashew nuts and cardamom.
4. ಗೊಡುಅಪ್ಪೋ (godu aappo)

Sweet dumplings made with wheat flour, coconut, broken puffed rice, cardamom and jaggery.
5. ಪತೊಳಿ (patholi)

Wheat flour cakes with a coconut, jaggery, broken puffed rice and cardamom filling; steamed in turmeric leaves.
6. ಪಂಚಕದಾಯಿ (panchkadai)

Sweet split bengal gram dust with coconut, sugar, white sesame and cardamom.
7. ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ (chakuli)

Fried snack made of finger millets, split & skinned black gram and cumin.
8. ಪಿಕ್ಕಲೇ ಕೇಳೇ ಪೋಡಿ (pikkale kelle phodi)

Fried ripe bananas.
9. ಹಾರ್ವೆ ಕೇಳೇ ಪೋಡಿ (harwe kelle phodi)

Fried raw bananas; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
10. ಜೀವಕಡ್ಗಿ ಪೋಡಿ (jeev kadgi phodi)

Fried breadfruit; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
11. ಬಟಾಟೆ ಪೋಡಿ (batate phodi)

Fried potatoes; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
12. ಸುರ್ನ ಪೋಡಿ (soorna phodi)

Fried yam; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
13. ಪಾಗಿಲ ಪೋಡಿ (phagila phodi)

Fried teasel gourd; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
14. ಗೋಯಿಂಟ ಪೋಡಿ (gointa phodi)

Fried pointed gourd; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
15. ಕಣಂಗ ಪೋಡಿ (kannanga phodi)

Fried sweet potato; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
16. ಕಾಳೆ ಅಲ್ವ ಮಡ್ಡಿ ಪೋಡಿ (kaale aalva maadi phodi)

Fried colocasia tuber; marinated in chili powder, semolina and gram flour.
17. ಪತ್ರಡೆ (patrode)

Steamed colocasia leaves in yellow split peas, bengal gram & yellow lentil paste with coconut, red chillies, tamarind and asafoetida.

18. ತಂದ್ಲ್ಯಾ ಕೋಟ್ಟೊ (tandla khottto)

Savoury rice cake steamed in jackfruit leaves.
19. ಗಜಭಜೆ (gajbaje)

Mixed vegetables in coconut based chili-tamrind curry tempered with mustard and curry leaves.

20. ಅಲಸಂದೆ ಸುಕ್ಕೆ (aalsande sukke)

String beans in dry coconut-based chili-tamarind-corainder-blqck gram paste.
21. ಬೀನ್ಸ್ ಉಪ್ಕಾರಿ (beansa upkari)

Stir-fried french beans & potatoes with a mustard, red chillies & curry leaves tempering; garnished in fresh coconut.

22. ತಾಉಷೆ ಉಲ್ಲೆಲ್ (toushe ullel)

Cucumber salad with chillies, ginger and a coconut, red chilli, mustard & tamarind masala.
23. ಕಣಂಗ ಗೋಡಿ ರಾಂದಯ್ (kannanga godi randai)

Sweet potato slow-cooked in jaggery and coconut milk.

24. ಶೀತ್ (sheetha)

Steamed rice.

25. ದಾಳಿ ಥೊಯ್ (dalitoy)

Spiced yellow lentil broth.
26. ಪೋವಾ ಖೀರಿ (phowa khiri)

Flattened rice in jaggery and coconut milk with raisins and cardamom.
27. ವರೈ ಕೋಟ್ಟೊ (varai khotto)

Finger millets & black gram cake steamed in jackfruit leaves.

28. ಪಂಚಕದಾಯಿ (panchkadai)

Puffed rice & jaggery mixture with coconut, flattened rice, honey, ghee, black sesame, banana and sugarcane.

29. ಚಟ್ನಿ (chutney)

Asafoetida chutney.
30. ಮೂಗದಾಳಿ ಪಂಚಕದಾಯಿ (mugadali panchkadai)

Sweet yellow split peas dust with coconut, jaggery, black sesame and cardamom.

31. ಶೀರಾ (sheera)

Semolina pudding.

32. ದೂಧ ಪಾನಾಕ್ (doodh paanak)

Milk sweetened with sugar, cardamom and black pepper.
