here's a MOON anecdote for ya: after the game came out, co-director Kenichi Nishii got an email from Satoru Iwata gushing about how much fun he & his wife were having with the game and how inspiring it was; Nishii, having no idea who he was, sent a reply to the effect of (>)

"thx, I hope you're able to make a fun game some day too!", which Iwata made sure to bring up the day Nishii came to pitch Giftpia to him & Miyamoto at Nintendo; apparently that was Nishii's second pitch as the first one went poorly but Iwata convinced Miyamoto to stick with him

MOON is a super-influential game, made by ex-members of Square who worked on Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger & SaGa, and the three co-directors all ended up collaborating with Nintendo on games like Chibi Robo, Giftpia, Captain Rainbow and Tingle DS, plus future Mario RPG games

Toby Fox is a big fan too, he did a roundtable interview with Moon co-director Yoshiro Kimura somewhat recently news.denfaminicogamer.jp/interview/1810…🇯🇵 (Touhou creator ZUN was also there, so most of the interview is Toby asking really specific questions about Touhou lore)
