Onion Games' Yoshiro Kimura and Kazuyuki Kurashima, co-director & character designer of the original Moon, talk about the upcoming re-release: what's new, what's different and why now 🇯🇵
why now? there had been many rumours over the last 10+ years about ports but these guys weren't directly involved back then; moreover, Kimura in particular wasn't particularly interested in revisiting the game and was intent on making newer, better games without looking back...
...but in late '17, around the time of the 20th anniversary, Kimura decided to replay Moon and found he wasn't as hung up over it as he expected to be; coincidentally, both he and Kurashima happened to unearth dev materials from the making of the original game, and then...
...a former colleague happened to locate the source code for a near-final build of the game, so with that massive discovery and their collective softening about returning to the game, partly caused by reunion events held for the 20th anniversary, the stars had finally aligned
there were discussions about how to approach the port and whether to redo the assets in HD, add additional content, etc; there will be additions and corrections to some of the art, partly due to missing/incomplete source assets, but their goal is basically to port the game as-is
the original game had an unused ending that's famous among hardcore fans and Kimura gave a lot of thought to including it as DLC but eventually decided against it; they apparently did a lot of work to recreate and flesh out that particular ending only to cut it again
so in essence, it's pretty much as it was, but there are some smaller enhancements: it runs at 60FPS, there are quicker transitions between maps, the Moon Disc tunes are in stereo rather than the mono tracks of the original release, etc
there's more in here about how the team met at Square, left and came together as Love-de-Lic, etc but a lot of that has been or will be covered so I'll leave all that alone
