Here's an inconvenient TRUTH.

A huge part of philanthropic money... those named halls?
campus buildings?
disease-fighting non-profits?
hospital wings?
Public libraries?
Scholarships?

LOTS and LOTS of "dirty" money.

Stanford —(have your read his speeches against Asians as inferior race to be deterred away?!)

ALL the foundations and good done from them via these Robber Barons came from men demonstrably no angels
Stanford: huge racist against Asians. Basically an articulate Trump.
He'd cringe to know over 20% of his namesake school are brilliant Asian heritage
If he alive today saying what he said he'd be shamed into oblivion.
Should "Stanford" name really remain?

Peter the Great learned he could tax consumption of alcohol—then he made it unpatriotic NOT to drink
He made it a crime to agitate AGAINST drinking b/c he was making so much money from it
2/ The most worrying trend to her?

1) Climate-caused resource conflicts leading to WAR —which “are always bad for women”

2) Aging populations that are top-heavy with insufficient young people that creates societal pressure on women to have more children
3/ Atwood invokes idea that those who FORGET history are condemned to REPEAT—

we forgot or ignore 40s censorship + purges done under a flag of virtue and a promise of utopia

i had NO IDEA of Nazis in the US with plan to hang 23 media moguls in a Hollywood park in the 30s (!?!)

2/ Here is a situation (per details of the article) where Epstein got NO public credit—and they actively sought to not give him credit. (He could have not donated and surely lie and say in private that he was a donor to MIT) BUT—

It feels like this is of public interest not because MIT sought to not credit Epstein (a “good” thing) but because at best it is affiliated with a bad person and by affiliation taints them as bad. OR worse because...

I worked in public libraries a long time. Here’s a short thread about “innovations” and “improvements” that were introduced to “free up staff time for more important duties” or to “give a better service to customers”.
First they built new style front desks. Fewer staff needed to run them. It meant customers had to queue a little longer, but there were more backroom staff. Then they cut the backroom staff. #libraries
Then they introduced new style computer terminals so library users could look up their own books. It meant librarians could be “freed up for more important work”. Users couldn’t find what they needed, but no help because they’d already cut the number of librarians.

I keep hearing that libraries should work harder to attract EVERYONE in the community. Nice thought, but what if they just carried on being there for the people who actually need them and stop trying to make Jack of all Trades? Fund them, and let library workers do their jobs.
Strong and successful communities are made of many elements that suit different groups at different times. It’s a jigsaw puzzle of our changing needs, not a one-stop-shop that fits all. I don’t use the park anymore, and I’ve never used the football pitches, but they’re important.
To build a strong and cohesive community we need different things at different times of our lives. You might not need the library right now, but others in your community do and the existence of it makes your community better. Protect that.

Do you not understand how unbelievably classist it is to say that everyone has a Netflix account or an Amazon Prime account? I know that people who you report on don't worry about those subscription prices, but for many lower income folks those CAN BE luxuries.
And they might not own a Kindle to take advantage of an ereader. So if they do read, it has to be at a computer. Which, again, not everyone is going to have. Did you know that public #libraries serve *everyone*, including *gasp* THE POOR?
