2020 truly is the year of weird: good or bad, everything feels strange. I'm grateful for the sense of normalcy #EyalaReads brings on the Sundays I'm able to curate it, and for you for reading with me. Enjoy this week's roundup of my fav reads on #Africa #WomensRights & #Feminism!
If you read only one thing this week, this is the one. Jesmyn Ward wrote her heart out in @VanityFair and I felt everything: the grief, the fatigue, the anger, the hope. Read this, it is magnificent. #EyalaReads
Ta-Nehisi Coates did a spectacular job as a guest-editor of The Great Fire, @VanityFair's September issue, about race relations and #racism in the US. I loved the interview Angela Davis gave @ava. Great insights for us African feminists, too. #EyalaReads

#AfricanNeuroscience [Thread]

Ever wondered what #Neuroscience research looks like in #Africa? For 3 years, we have been working on profiling the neuroscience research landscape in the continent’s 54 countries. Very excited to share our latest work:…

(1) Image
Why is this important?
#Africa has real potential in #Neuroscience, but needs help to rise from its current position! To do this, we need accurate data that reflects the heterogeneity of research across the continent's 54 countries.

Such data is lacking, as previous estimates about research outputs from #Africa are mostly inaccurate, partly because it is difficult to tell whether the research was, in fact, conducted within Africa or outside the continent in collaboration with #Africanscientists

1/11 How can a country quickly implement emergency #CashTransfers when hit by a shock like #COVID19? Options include increasing the value of existing transfers, expanding coverage, or by setting-up interventions based on existing structure. See image from @ValentinaBarca_ et al.
2/11 Tayssir, a #CCT managed by the @MarocEducation covering 2 million students in both rural & urban areas, is the only large-scale social #CashTransfer programme in #Morocco. However, the emergency benefit for #InformalWorkers didn’t rely on Tayssir to respond to #COVID19. Why?
3/11 In part because Tayssir doesn't have its own targeting mechanism. It also uses RAMED'S proxy means test to determine eligibility in urban areas. See So, was the main reason to use RAMED cards because of its good targeting performance? Not really…

1/11 As of 30 April, there were 4,359 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in #Morocco. The country has put in place strong confinement measures with an Oxford Stringency Index of 80.95. The partial lockdown led 57% of firms to suspend their activities and lay off workers.
2/11 #CashTransfer schemes for both affected #FormalWorkers and #InformalWorkers were announced and are being implemented as part of the government responses to #COVID19. They are financed through a special fund to fight #COVID19. See @financesmaroc:
3/11 The fund started with MAD 10B (USD 1B) from the general budget. @CnssMaroc contributed with MAD 500M from its #UnemploymentInsurance branch. See Combined with other donations the fund has reached MAD 32B by 24 April.

My office have been in contact w @foreignoffice I am afraid the message was that people will have to wait until #Morocco allows flights and ferries to re-commence.

They should check with their travel insurer to see if they will cover the further costs of accommodation etc
It appears there are so many travel restrictions at the moment they do not have the capacity to negotiate with all the countries where people are trapped or provide flights to bring people back to the UK.

#Casablanca : The Biggest City of #Morocco
Casablanca is Morocco's largest city. The first thing to do is to visit the famous Hassan II Mosque, which is the largest mosque in North Africa and was proposed by the late King Hassan II.
The Hassan II Mosque is also known as the Maritime Mosque because one third of the entire mosque is built on the sea.

Being in #Berlin while the preparations for the #Libya Peace Conference were under way, I gave an interview to the excellent @SumangaliS @dwnews about the possible outcomes of Sunday's meeting plus the assessment o the players including #IslamicState.
@SumangaliS @dwnews My Two cents on #BerlinConference on #Libya:
1- Interesting that a major player, #Morocco, was not invited, while it was instrumental in the accords of #Skhirat.
2- Invited though: #Tunisia, #Algeria and #Qatar, countries favourable to the #GNA.
3- Like in #Moscow, the two #Libya-n parties the #GNA #Serraj & the #LNA #Haftar did NOT meet in #Berlin. Last time they met in an international-sponsored conference was in #France under the leadership of President #Macron.
4- Telling that the photo-op did not include any Libyans

1/ This morning's Islamic History lecture @UniofOxford was on the Islamic West. We talked a lot about the #Berber "false prophets," incl. Salih ibn Tarif (ca. 8th c.), a mysterious figure from #Morocco who founded his own religion and possessed a Berber scripture (a "#Quran")
2/ Salih seems to have understood prophecy in vaguely Islamic terms, even though he was not a Muslim (or at least a conventional one). He claimed that #Quran 66:4 referred to him when it speaks of "the righteous of the faithful" (salih al-mu'minin)
3/ Salih seems to have inverted or altered several Islamic practices: his followers fasted in the month of Rajab but ate in #Ramadan; they prayed five times a day and five at night; and they were given to crying out, "Maggar yakush" in Berber ("God is great," الله أكبر)
