Teaching a class this semester on the census. Course description encouraged eligible students consider applying to become a census worker. At least one student did so. Imagine getting paid a decent wage to experience how America’s first digital census will actually roll-out.
What is design? I think it is positionality. You position yourself in between things to construct something. Can we unhack the census? That’s the class. Do we know anything about America’s first digital census UX led by Wilbur Ross (with support from Palantir?)? No. No we do not.
The oath taken by census workers is serious with criminal penalties for abuse. $250,000 and prison time for violations. These are the people on the frontlines of hard-to-count tracts convincing folks that Title 13 is sarcosanct so the Trump admin and Palantir won’t do bad things.

Even in the almost certain outcome that the Senate would acquit, the incumbent could still lose the election. If it’s all just predictive analytics then what about demoralizing turnout by not impeaching?
A vape ban could be as consequential as impeachment. We can’t predict the future. Punditry is our poison. Principles are all that we have left.

This new @carolecadwalla profile emphasizes what sole individuals risk and endure for sticking their necks out to expose corruption especially when regal institutions fail to do so. theatlantic.com/international/…
My critique of the piece was far too subtle but the Atlantic is one of these regal institutions that not only failed to uncover scandals but also failed to contend with sexism that undergirds attacks on a fearless freelancer who has outdone male staffers.

So today, we started to look at our collected data on how we matched picture book covers to book summaries. We looked at our guesses and shared what clues in the images led us to make the guesses that we made. The data and our conversations revealed many of our own biases to us.
This was a particularly telling set: Here were the two picture book covers and the results of how we guessed which summary matched which book:
Most kids guessed wrong. But before I told them that, I asked my mostly-white students why they made the guesses they made. Students shared the girl on the book 6 cover looked lonely and seemed "different" and might have been made fun of like in "other books they've read."

Example: placing racks in the Santa Clara data centre. Considerations, restrictions on space, power, future use of space, etc. Also: People install racks. They need to be able to intervene based on info that the placement model doesn't have. #ODSCWest

The SPM English paper has an option of writing stories. Many students write terrible stories, or are terrified that they will write a terrible story.
One of the most common characteristics of bad stories written by students is neglecting Chekhov's Gun.
So a character in a student's story is getting ready to go out with friends. He puts on some clothes, sprays some perfume, and puts on a pair of limited edition pearly white Nike hightop sneakers. Notice the extra detailed description of the shoes. This is a Chekhov's Gun.
