I will never understand critics' adulation for these boring white guys.
Any cineaste who praises Dogville or Dead Man gets an immediate side-eye from me. I cannot fathom what anyone sees in either.
Reminder that saying a movie cannot be bad because it is made with great technical skill is like saying a novel is great because it has good spelling.

Something Bob Altemeyer mentioned in The Authoritarians is that people get more authoritarian when confronted with violence of (almost) any kind.

I covered this in my livetweet of the book:
When people fear society is getting more violent, they turn to the authorities to keep them safe. This increased trust in authority can be highly exploitable, which is how we get the War on Terror and why white nationalists insist Black and brown people are going to kill us all.

Namely, that the things white people are disaffected about are the same things as everyone else: lack of job security, growing wealth inequality, rising cost of living, and all the other horrors of late capitalism.
And they're not fools when it comes to the causes of these problems. And it is natural that they would feel some sympathy for Leftist arguments.

.@TMobile your insurance parter @Assurant is #garbage. I need to wait 5 days for my claim to be reviewed? I should just not have a phone and then they will contact me on my broken phone to tell me if I was approved? How stupid. What am I supposed to do for a week + shipping time?
I just got off the phone with a manager at @Assurant who told me that since my phone isn’t working I should “go to the library” to check on my claim! That they “do now know why” my claim was flagged for additional review, tht they “wish they could tell” me why, but cant. @TMobile
They said they know that the claim only involves general info and a 1 sentence discription of the incident but that it will still take up to 5 days to review and they they “wished they had a bigger team to do reviews” but they don’t. And that it’s fine bc @TMobile, agreed to this

This latest episode, with Singal launching a broadside against *yet another* trans woman of letters, is yet another demonstration of his transmisogyny. He's defending a doctor who calls trans people "dangerous" and akin to "identifying a a cucumber."
He then attacks the woman who's pointing this out, calls her a "cop," and condemns her for antagonising someone who merely "wrote a blog post skeptical of youth transition." This is the kind of opinion laundering Singal does for the more nakedly virulent bigots that surround him.
Calling trans people a threat to civilisation and saying we "indoctrinate" children becomes rational "skepticism." This is why we say this man is obsessed with us. Who else would or could blast such blatant, easily-disproven falsehoods about us over social media?

This is a story from when I was young, and first shared 3 yrs ago: My dad is a garbage man and has worked for a private, not city run, company for over 20 years. This company is owned by an Italian American family. Employed at this company are a large number of Mexican Americans
One particularly grueling role in the industry is the MRF line, or Materials Recovery Facility to receive, separate and prepare recyclables from all incoming trash. The majority of the employees at our MRF are Mexican women. Mothers, sisters, daughters.
On one horrendous day, one of these women found the worst case scenario: the cold and lifeless body of a newborn infant. After some investigation, the mother was identified. She wasn't a criminal or a monster, she was a child herself, deathly afraid and felt without options.
