In retrospect, Obama's 2012 campaign should probably be seen as a successful concerted bid to hold down Romney's margins with white non-college voters in the places Trump later won. That seems to imply holding the line -- at minimum -- should probably be a big priority.
Obama didn't do better by accident, D's made Bain, auto rescue, Mitt as business-friendly elitist the absolute front and center of the campaign in a very difficult economic environment. May not be as easy under Trump, but even small changes in the margin are hugely important.
FWIW, plenty of Democrats and Republicans alike assumed they'd try the same thing with Trump in early 2016! Instead the focus was more on his character and fitness for office. msnbc.com/msnbc/how-demo…
