"Ivory tower elites" in this case are mostly freelancers working for pennies because they love film too much not to write about it
Tim Pool is playing to an audience that want their love of the most accessible and crowd-pleasing works continuously validated. They can't just enjoy art, their art must also be considered The Best
But of course, critically engaging with media generally leads to your media preferences changing over time. You get bored of certain common conventions, you seek more convincing acting, bolder aesthetic ideas, etc
Eventually, you often get tired of the most indulgent, fan-pleasing works. The audience Pool is playing to have no interest in this process, but they still want to be considered consumers of the Best Art
How do you square this circle? Easy! You say these "elites" are deceitfully pursuing an agenda, instead of genuinely enjoying different things. Liking the most popular things can thus be framed as a populist rebellion!
The right-wing fandom crowd are all about reframing any sort of intellectual curiosity as "elitism." Their movement is predicated on demanding the right to think less, and have their unconsidered media preferences validated more
Don't fall for charlatans like this. "The right to not have my favorite media critiqued" is an embarrassing rallying cry
And more fundamentally, please try and give fewer shits in general about having the media you like critically validated. We all like plenty of media of all stripes, that shouldn't be considered meaningfully reflective of your character
Treating your favorite media as a key part of your selfhood is just a terribly unhealthy way to live, and it will always lead to exploitation like this
