I remember from my student days, a lecturer saying it's impossible for a business to be ethical once it gets to a certain size: The value judgements of a customer business will inevitably be in conflict with the ethics of the business itself.

Can I find a reference? No

Anyone?
The reasoning is simply that you can't control large numbers of peoples thinking so you either have to accept a smaller market that accepts your ethics, or accept that your ethics will be compromised.

At least that's what I remember from the lecture.
It's easy to find examples of this if you think about it.

Someone said my idea for a "restrictions against use for modern slavery and [or] oil extraction" open source license was a great idea.

Has nobody done it?

Because it's obvious to me that if software was released under this kind of license, most of us would be fine in the tech world, but it would put some big companies and governments in legal problems.

And that could be interesting.

Because licenses are our superpower.
It's how we as an industry started to fight back in the 90s against big tech.

Maybe we can take that fight to big oil.

Maybe it's naive but maybe, just maybe it's also a plan that might work.

The pressure is working! AWS is changing. Well done @AMZNforClimate and @emahlee!

It's a start! 80% by 2024 is ok (can you go faster?)

But this is only a promise. Now we need data and regular reports on electricity usage/emissions across Amazon/AWS.

It might be enough to take the wind out of the @AMZNforClimate movement

* it gives you most of what they want
* but not enough to actually enact real change in a short timescale
* it stops Amazon having to get into politics or ditch customers ...
...and it's over a timescale that is too far into the future for @AMZNforClimate to sustain itself - 2024 and 2030.

What worries me is that this is strategically very clever, and from a PR point it's very cynical.

But then, I am a little cynical about how Amazon does PR.

The individual engaged in ‘dissident’ thought is essentially building his own context in order to depart from ‘common sense’. He does this by building a canon of important books (along with his commentary), associating with like-minded people (or close enough), etc.
Departing from ‘common sense’ is a process of stacking up blocks which you then climb on top of, building up presuppositions that let you think increasingly ‘uncommon’ thoughts. It’s easy to do alone (easier the more alone), possible in small groups, but it’s VERY hard to scale.
When a group gets to a certain size you have to think about organization - division of labor, administration, etc - and this requires setting clear goals. For a business this is easy: the goals come from without - you’re a service - and you get plenty of feedback on execution.

Here's the problem with "suggestions": the effort required to do something about them - even just to say "no for now", is an order of magnitude greater than the effort to make the suggestion in the first place. Thread.
This is especially the case when the suggestion is made by people from "outside" a team.
Like anyone can email me an be like "Hey Paul, think we should do X?", and that's fine because it's just a suggestion, maybe a good one too. But the amount of effort required to consider and answer that is really high.
