At least 41% of people recruited into #trafficking are recruited by their family members according to @UNmigration. Their data shows that the majority age of the children exploited in this way are between 15-17, Demi’s age at the time of her #exploitation.
Familial sex trafficking of minors involves traffickers giving offenders sexual access to victims (in person or via child pornography) in exchange for drugs, money, or something else of value.
It is often difficult for victims of sex trafficking to understand the exploitation because it often involves subtle, gradual shifts in relationships w/people they already trust, like friends or romantic partners.
This is especially true when the exploiter is a parent or family member - someone responsible for helping define your world view and norms. It is CRUCIAL that we support, believe, and stand with survivors as they speak up & out about their exploitation. #StandWithSurvivors
