1/ #DenimDay History: A Thread (Trigger Warning)

In 1992 Italy, an 18-year old girl is picked up by her married 45-year old driving instructor for her very first lesson. He takes her to an isolated road, pulls her out of the car, wrestles her out of one leg of her jeans and

In light of the Boston police Union leader child abuse, this is very plausible, even probable. I have 2x, on behalf of someone else, reported, via Title IX - the woman or gay man was not feeling safe enuf to report. Yes, there is blowback when one reports. But we can’t be silent.
I am a mandated reporter as a #pediatrician. I *must* report for my patients or face legal consequences. Am same for staff, students, trainees. But in #EmergencyMedicine who do I call if a child may be unsafe at home? Sometimes, cops. Are cops safe?

boston.com/news/local-new…
I have seen #mentalhealth and entire life paths destroyed by abusers preying on children like: This happened to too many people I know. I have seen institutions intimidate, mislabel, bury stories of the victims. (Some predators wait until 18th birthday.)

To the victim who reported the predator, I believe you. I stand with you. I applaud you. Victims who bring lawsuits against institutions & predators have been forced to do so by the inaction &/or retaliatory actions of these said institutions. It is often the last resort. A 🧵1/9
The hope is that the lawsuit will stop the retaliation, but it doesn’t. Instead institutions double down and continue to protect & hide the perpetrators from any real consequences. They intimidate, retaliate, and focus their wrath on the victim who dared to report the assault 2/9
They present the victim as the bad guy, the nuisance that won’t stop demanding things (aka the basic right to work in a safe environment free of sexual assault, harassment, discrimination, etc). 3/9

I just want to say that those of us who have been working in gun violence prevention are not at all surprised by what happened this week. We have targeted, harassed & threatened by these kinds people for years. 1/@MomsDemand @Everytown @bradybuzz @GabbyGiffords @sandyhook
Many of us have reached out to @Twitter @Facebook @Google and law enforcement because they have threatened us with rape, home invasion, murdering our kids and pets and extended family members. @shannonrwatts has been especially targeted 2/
For those who are survivors of gun violence like @kharyp and @lucymcbath and the families of Sandy Hook, the harassment is particularly grotesque. Claiming loved ones never existed, blaming them for their own deaths.

I think this piece is accurate in the extremely narrow sense that there wasn’t a widespread hashtag but fails as cultural commentary.

A quick trip down memory lane to remind us what the conversation was related to #Kavanaugh & #MeToo back then.
nytimes.com/2020/05/18/opi…
So, first off, Faludi seems right that there wasn’t a huge #BelieveAllWomen phenomena, although “believe all women” was bantered about by some.

But this ignores the rush to believe women without or before evidence in a way that has clear political goals.
Instead of Ford - whose allegations clearly split the country in terms of their credibility - let’s focus on Julie Swetnick, once represented by Michael Avenatti. Her testimony was what started the “gang rape” narrative.

A lot’s been written about the double standard in how the media/liberals have responded to the Biden/Kavanaugh allegations. But here's a thread laying out just how pervasive that double standard really is.

Here’s a list of the 50 biggest hypocrites:
1/ ELIZABETH WARREN:

“I believe Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. My heart broke watching her testify. She’s a hero – brave, compelling, credible” facebook.com/ElizabethWarre…

2/ CHUCK SCHUMER:

THREAD: Stacey Abrams is a #MeToo hypocrite.

As the self-proclaimed governor of Georgia joins Joe Biden on MSNBC tonight, her blatantly political dismissal of Tara Reade’s sexual assault allegations proves one thing...
donaldjtrump.com/media/stacey-a…
Abrams is a ‘Me Too’ hypocrite who puts her own political ambitions ahead of survivors.

Actively campaigning to be Biden’s running mate, Abrams has been more than happy to ditch her “believe survivors” principles even amid growing corroboration of Tara Reade’s story.
Abrams’ crass dismissal of Tara Reade and support for Joe Biden simply cannot be reconciled with her relatively recent statements about believing and trusting women who level allegations of sexual assault:

I went through the Twitter accounts of 35 Democrats who have endorsed Joe Biden since Tara Reade came forward with her accusation on March 25. Compare what they had to say about Kavanaugh and #MeToo to their silence now.

Some highlights:

@SpeakerPelosi: "We must #BelieveSurvivors"

@PramilaJayapal: "@JoeBiden is not answering the question about #MeToo Or is his answer 'get men involved'?"

@SenatorBaldwin (potential VP pick?): "Believe women."
.@senwarren: "Many survivors of sexual assault choose not to speak out, for a thousand different reasons. But when they do, they deserve to be heard."

And perhaps most stunning, @RepKatiePorter: "We must take *all* claims of sexual assault seriously regardless of party."

5 years ago, I was a Nanny in a man's home. He was married but that did not stop him from drugging me & entering my room & raping me. It was on Friday the 13th & the day before Valentines Day. He went out to dinner the next day to celebrate V-day w/ his wife. #IBelieveTaraReade
That whole week he was hostile & threatening to me. Friday one week after it happened. He spent 2 hours stomping above my bedroom (He designed the home). He only stopped when I turned my light on. I was terrified for my life.
The next day, to disarm him, because I was so afraid, I acted like everything was normal. At the end of the day, I collected my pay for the week & that evening when I was off work, I left for good.

The silencing of survivors happens in many (nuanced) ways. One of them is the attitudes that are held by those in positions of power. #BelieveSurvivors #StopTheViolence
When those in power express their problematic attitudes and mindsets, survivors become unwilling to employ the mechanisms that are available to access the assistance they need.
We all carry the responsibility to understand sexual violence for what it is, and to unlearn the problematic mindsets which drive and aggrevate sexual violence in our communities.

Real talk: The moment ONE victim comes forward with a credible allegation that they have been sexually assaulted, an investigation must be opened into what happened. #FairfaxResign #BelieveSurvivors #MeToo
Appropriate measures must taken regarding the alleged perpetrator's behavior, including but not limited to suspension from job duties while the investigation is occurring. #FairfaxResign #BelieveSurvivors
Suspension is not a punitive measure. It is done to protect the public & ensure that the internal investigation doesn't get derailed by the accused who would still have access to files, computers, company cell phone, etc. that could hold evidence. #FairfaxResign #BelieveSurvivors

He decided to include me in this response so I wanted to help add to the narrative.
I was surprised that Todd decided to use her post about surviving an assault to all but say “it was me” to the other part of Jessie’s story around the unnamed VA in this post. You were not called out by name so you thought that jumping in and saying it you was a good idea?
To include my name and not others who were there that evening who are not heavily involved in the anime industry still is a calculated move. To share screenshots of a private conversation without asking permission is a calculated move.

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford: My 2018 Heroine

(THREAD)

On September 27, 2018, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford raised her right hand, swore to tell the truth to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and changed history—especially of the #MeToo movement.

1/

#Sigma2018
While Brett Kavanaugh was ultimately confirmed to SCOTUS, Dr. Ford's testimony exampled that of a courageous survivor speaking truth to power on national television. This is how awareness is raised.

At first glance, Dr. Ford didn't appear to be courageous. In fact, she didn't believe herself to be. But as a fellow survivor, I know how much it takes to be fearful and to do what one thinks is right regardless. This IS courage.

The Media's Obsession With @MichaelAvenatti Has Gone Far Enough thefederalist.com/2018/11/15/the…
It is time for the media to have a serious reckoning about Michael Avenatti. The “Creepy Porn Lawyer” was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony domestic battery in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the news isn’t a huge surprise given his public track record.
Since becoming a household name in March, he has lied about potential evidence, manipulated his client’s statement, been accused of outright fraud, failed to pay millions in taxes, and was ordered to pay a $10 million judgement to a former associate.
