To his credit, Goldwater was also one of the GOP senators who went to the White House in August 1974 to inform Nixon that it was time to resign.
But also, Goldwater's base consisted of John Birch Society conspiracy theory obsessives, unrepentant McCarthyites, Southern segregationist terrorists, and anti-union thugs. In other words, the grandparents of Trump's base.
