"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice." --the biggest applause line spoken by Barry Goldwater, GOP nominee for President, at the 1964 GOP convention.
To his credit, Goldwater was also one of the GOP senators who went to the White House in August 1974 to inform Nixon that it was time to resign.
But also, Goldwater's base consisted of John Birch Society conspiracy theory obsessives, unrepentant McCarthyites, Southern segregationist terrorists, and anti-union thugs. In other words, the grandparents of Trump's base.

This is why he assumes all congressional inquiries are pointless political grandstanding, because that’s how he treated them. As always, GOP accusations are 100% projection.
The GOP has stumbled on a real winning strategy here.
a) When in control of Congress during a Democratic administration (2010-16), use Congressional power to engage in cynical, frivolous oversight to pointlessly harass the executive and undermine the reputation of Congress.

Trump's phone call to Zelensky shows that he believes it's ok to collude with a foreign government to help win an election. When one reads the Mueller Report in this context, it puts his campaign's 2016 openness to Russian assistance in a different, and not better, light. 1/
Also, Trump's own WH staff (including Pompeo?) responded AT THE TIME of the Zelensky call with actions showing they thought something untoward had happened. Why else hide the evidence in a top-secret location only reserved for national security secrets? 2/
The Republicans are trying to muddy the waters by investigating the investigators from 2016, the public servants who received and then acted upon many, independent, and in hindsight totally credible reports of fishy-looking contacts between the Trump campaign and the Russians. 3/

One difference between our current moment and Watergate is that in the 1970s there were at least some Republicans who were more loyal to empirical truth and the rule of law than they were to their president. We remember those anti-Bill Barrs positively.

Go back and listen to Slow Burn season 1 and Bag Man. Nixon and Agnew were willing to do all kinds of crazy sh*t to stay in power, the difference was there were a few people around them and Republicans in positions of power with the courage to say "enough."
Part of our current problem is a problem of faulty historical memory. In my experience, many boomers (and even Gen Xers too) drew an understandable but ultimately only partially correct lesson from Watergate--that all politicians are crooks and all institutions are corrupt.

Conservatives and conservatism.

These terms are always tossed around but too few know much of the history or figures envolved.
This thread address the history of the movement, highlights lesser and better known individuals and seminal modern writings all should be aware of.
The modern American conservative movement most trace back to the 1964 Goldwater campaign. Given this did bring conservatism back to the forefront of national consciousness, the movement got its traction post WWII.
Roots of American conservatism stretch back to the birth of our nation and our expressed founding values. Natural law. The first 5 presidents were of the founding generation. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.
