My week, part 29663, nefarious kerning edition.
I guess we got caught using our custom publishing software (provided by our masters in the voting machine industry) designed specifically to make it difficult to search for the word “ballot”.
This is some DaVinci Code-level intrigue we were pulling off right here. And we would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn’t been for those meddling kids.
(By “DaVinci Code-level, I mean, of course, utterly awful and formulaic.)

So about this “warrantless encryption” thing. We’ve been here before.

The first time was way back in 1993, a time when the Internet was just starting to gain widespread traction and concerns about privacy and information security were on the cusp of entering the mainstream.

Encryption wasn’t routinely used by the public in 1993, but it was becoming clear to almost everyone that it would soon be a critical tool - maybe the only viable tool - for protecting private communication and data in an increasingly complex and connected networked world. 2/
The government saw the handwriting on the wall. They knew, and the rest of us nerds knew, that encryption would soon need to be integrated, at large scale, into the infrastructure that we have today in 2019. And 1993 was when we needed to get to work on this. 3/

While ballot marking devices introduce security risks and tradeoffs that we need to understand better, this is not the most pressing problem or most productive election security hill to chose to die on right now. Getting Risk Limiting Audits in every state is.
Why? Because even the most rigorously voter-verified paper ballots don't help if the process that uses them is compromised. Risk Limiting Audits can confirm that the election outcome is correct, but only if we actually conduct them.
I believe the best currently available voting technology is (a) precinct counted, voter-marked paper ballots coupled with (b) risk limiting audits. We're making enormous progress on (a). (b) has gotten very little attention.
