High Contrast (Maleficent) vs. Low Contrast (Environment)

High Saturation (Maleficent) vs. Low Saturation (Environment)

This is how you create distance with color.
The same holds true in this wide shot.

Check out how the floor was painted. Contrast and saturation increase the closer the pattern gets to the camera. Behind her gown, the floor is nearly gray.

That's distance through color happening all on one surface plane.
This is called "atmospheric perspective".

It's like a room or a landscape with a foggy atmosphere.

Objects get faded the farther away they are.

To create the effect in art, turn up or down the contrast and saturation.
