Maybe govt officials should be paid on the basis of how much they increase average citizen income, national competitiveness and other performance indicators, like CEOs of companies.

That might put a stop to politicians who are running for office promising to actually make everyone poorer in the name of some ideology. How many are today running on the platform of "managed decline"?
As each candidate vies to make everyone poorer the professional claques clap the harder like scene from a Stalinesque speech. Why are they clapping? Have we gone mad?
