Slavery may have been officially and legally ended many years ago, but in Brazil, the consequences of this period are still felt today, especially through the religious intolerance towards religions that came from Africa, for instance candomblé, and social inequality.
Candomblé is an Afro-Brazilian religious tradition that originated in Salvador, Bahia at the beginning of the 19th century. It was born of a people who were taken from their homes in Africa and transplanted to Brazil during the slave trade.

“Many problems that characterised the past have persisted to the present day. Poverty continues to ravage a significant chunk of the population, and various indicators place the country among the global champions of social inequality.” , noted Lilia M Schwarcz.
“According to the Woman, Family and Human Rights Ministry, 1,506 complaints about religious intolerance were registered in Brazil between January 2016 and June 2018 (...)
(...) Among the complaints filed during that period, without counting those in which no particular religion was identified, more than half the victims practiced religions with African roots, such as Candomble and Umbanda.”
