Are you ready for a story that has single-handedly restored my faith in humanity, ending in a shameless plug for this local IT business owner, Imran Moorad of Dotsight Solutions, everybody please hire him?
Two weeks ago, I left my laptop on Amtrak on my way back to DC from NYC. I was feeling a little down and philosophical and had one of those trips where you just start blabbedy blabbing about nonsense with your stranger seatmate (s/o @JennyAment)
@JennyAment We started into the Amtrak Chardonnay and, well, continued into it, and at some point I shut my laptop and put it into the seat back and OF COURSE forgot it when I left.
@JennyAment Whoever found it was a bad actor, although losing it was of course my fault. The next morning, as I typed escalatingly stern messages to it on Find my iPhone, I watched it move to various locations in Woodbridge and then disappear.
@JennyAment I filed a police report, but the cops won’t do much beyond accompany you to the last known address and hang back while you knock. That seemed dangerous for everybody. So I went Nancy Drew and yadda yadda found email addresses of some people on the block and emailed them.
@JennyAment And it turns out the last known address that showed up on Find My was not the thief, but Imran, a local IT business owner who refurbishes laptops for clients. The laptop had been laundered enough to look like a legit sale when he bought it.
@JennyAment One of his neighbors got an email from me and asked him about it. “You know computers - is this a scam? Should we be worried?” they said. (SORRY NEIGHBORS!) And he put two and two together and called me right away.
@JennyAment He knows enough about IT to know that the laptop was no longer traceable at this point. He also googled me to see if this wasn’t all a nightmarish coincidence, found my Twitter, and saw that I’d already given up. He had zero practical reason to give me my laptop back.
@JennyAment But do you know what he did instead? He had the screen repaired, because he noticed I’d cracked it. He subbed out the faulty 2017 MacBook keyboard I had for a new one. He cleaned it like I was his client. And he just gave it back to me and refused to accept a penny.
@JennyAment He told me it’s because he believes in karma. He was out $600 from buying my computer but said I absolutely couldn’t pay him back. He is definitely okay with me doing the free advertising here, lol. But so am I! My God! The least I could do!
@JennyAment I’m sitting in my car weeping now, because it’s so important to remember that most people in the world are kind. They are aching to help. This story started in one of the darker moments of my adult life so far, and look where it ended. Imran, thank you. ❤️
@JennyAment PS: hire Imran for all your DC area computing needs!! dotsightsolutions.business.site/#summary
@JennyAment Update: I ended today by accidentally leaving another laptop at a friend’s house.
@JennyAment Impt clarification because I'm getting messages from national media about this, wowee: I made a mistake on one part of this timeline! Imran sheepishly corrected me this AM (and TOLD ME YESTERDAY, but I think I was too verklempt at the beauty of the world to be listening) that...
@JennyAment ...he had most of the big repair work on the laptop done by the time the neighbors asked him about the email and he realized it was stolen. So when he called me and gave me the restored laptop for $0 and lovingly went over how he had improved it bc he wanted me to see...
@JennyAment ...how he treated his clients, it was with a laptop he had had repaired thinking he was going to be able to actually resell to his clients. Whoops. THIS IS COMPLETELY MY BAD. And I don't think my having scrambled those two parts of the timeline detracts from the kindness at all.
@JennyAment Also, he is as talented as he is scrupulously honest - my laptop is now some kind of super Ferrari.
