Hi, everyone! I'm Amy -- Sara's campaign manager. My pronouns are she/her/hers, and I'm doing a temporary takeover of Sara's social media for #NationalComingOutDay. 1/
I've had the good fortune to know Sara for a number of years now -- back when she was happy writing policy memos for hours on end (this hasn't actually changed) and long before she considered running for Congress. 2/
Despite having surrounded myself with LGBTQ+ folks in the years since coming out, I was genuinely shocked when Sara was the first person (and still one of the very few) to ask my preferred pronouns. 3/
She's an ally who shows up for our community at every turn; not only because it's the right thing to do, but because, as the sister of two LGBTQ+ siblings, our fight is personal. 4/
I didn't come out until college. I have San Diego roots, but grew up in a small town in Montana -- where being gay still feels uncomfortable on a good day and downright dangerous on a bad one. 5/
In high school, one of my classmates proudly proclaimed that LGBTQ+ people (he used a slur) deserve to be tortured and killed. He wasn't reprimanded; in fact, his father defended him, calling our community "human debris." 6/
One day in college, I uncomfortably told my sister that my girlfriend had just broken up with me. She didn't miss a beat; she consoled me as any caring sibling would. 7/
Coming out is uncomfortable, painful, and, ultimately, freeing. I'm always grateful for that freedom, more than anything -- to have a supportive family, to be married to my amazing wife, to be out and proud at work, and to help others out of the closet, when they're ready. 8/
Of course, not everyone has that freedom. I was deeply anxious and physically ill this week when the Supreme Court heard arguments in the case that will decide whether sexual orientation and gender identity are still cause for being fired. In 2019. In the USA. 9/
I'm proud to be out, I'm proud to be gay, and I'm proud to be in this fight. As they say, you don't get what you don't fight for. /end
