1/ In today’s episode of “Impeachment Is In The Constitution”—

Impeachment is the constitutional way of investigating presidents who allegedly commit crimes.

It was CREATED BY THE PEOPLE WHO INVENTED OUR CONSTITUTIONAL ELECTORAL PROCESS.
2/ There’s no clause in the Constitution regarding impeachment that says:

“Hey. Wait. Is there an election coming up? Let’s skip it.”
3/ Want to talk about what the Framers thought (to the degree that we can)?

They were worried about runaway executive power—and in particular, criminal behavior by a single person w/great power—the President—that needed to be checked.
4/ “Checks and balances” isn’t just a rote phrase.

The Constitution creates 3 co-equal branches of government, monitored by checks —restraints—on their power.

Power—balancing power—is at the heart of the Constitution.

Impeachment is part of that balance.
5/ Impeachment does not counteract elections.

It does not take the place of elections.

It’s not an either/or proposition.

Impeachment holds the winner of an election accountability for his/her actions.

ACCOUNTABILITY: that’s at the heart of our system of government as well.
6/ It’s important to note as well—again—that impeachment DOESN’T MEAN automatic removal of a president.

It’s an investigation, with separate stages.

It’s a process.
