Kelley and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Elijah Cummings, and we offer our most sincere condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.
Elijah was a true civil rights advocate with a strong passion for criminal justice reform, which I saw firsthand during our work together on the REDEEM Act to reform expungement laws.
His fight for justice in our communities will forever be a part of his legacy, and today we join the country in honoring and remembering the life of such a dedicated public servant.

We have before the Senate today, the National Defense Authorization Act to authorize the programs and policies of the Department of Defense. We’ll be taking the vote to finalize that bill shortly.
Our national defense is incredibly important, it’s mandated in the Constitution. Our national defense is arguably Congress’ primary Constitutional responsibility.
I have great respect and honor for those in uniform who serve. In fact, I recently introduced a bill to give each soldier who served in the War on Terror a $2500 bonus and at the same time officially end the Afghan War. Ending the Afghan War would save us about $50 billion/yr.

Today is #VeteransDay, the day where our Nation honors the women and men who have stepped forward and answered when our nation has called.
As such, we owe them and their families a depth of gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication to the principles of our country, which extends beyond platitudes. They will hear the saying, “Thank you for your service” many times today.
While this is a more than appropriate expression of gratitude encourage you all to do more. I encourage you thank a veteran through your actions as well as your words. Remember, these men and women have sacrificed some of the best years of their lives on our behalf.

via physical ailments. Sometimes it can be a painful process, and all you have to do is ask your guides/higher self to help you ease thru the purging/healing. Listen to that inner voice/synchronicities in #s, as that is your guidance w/ some angelic msg, if one is not activated

Make sure you have emergency supplies in your car: water, food, charger for your phone, blankets, first aid kit, etc. Be safe rather than sorry and travel prepared!

Deeply saddened to hear of Ram Dass’ passing because I loved him and his words. But he also wrote things like “Dying is absolutely safe” so I know he is fine. Wishing him a safe passage to his next destination. #lovingramdass
He came to see “Liberal Arts” when it was at the Maui Film Festival. The following day at his home he told me “The stroke has been so wonderful. Because it taught me that I’m not my body. It happened to my body. It didn’t happen to me. I needed to get that.”
A few years later I visited him again in Maui. I wrote a song about him while I was there. I’ll never forget his smile as I played it for him (and that I was inexplicably not allergic to his cat.) #lovingramdass

I'm literally nerding out on this series of maps I've created. Sometimes a bit of repetitive, mundane work can pay off! These maps show Dem v. GOP candidates at the presidential level by county every four years from 1944-2016. historianstevecampbell.com/uploads/4/4/6/…
You can read it from left to right to see change over time through periods of 20 yrs, which has the advantage of smoothing out freakish elections when something rare was going on or when there was a third party candidate, and from top to bottom to see change between each election
I'm focusing on the South because it's arguably the best place to test the influence of race on electoral returns. You can see the shift of voting patterns between white southerners and African Americans.

John McCain was fiercely devoted to his family, his constituents, and his country. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. As a nation, we all share in the sense of emptiness his passing has left behind.
John McCain and I disagreed on many things, and sometimes quite forcefully. But even when we disagreed, I always respected that his heart was focused on doing what he thought was best for the American people.
Democrat or Republican, foreign leader or President of the US, John McCain would go toe to toe with anyone to fight for what he thought was right. At a time when character & integrity are under siege, we all mourn the loss of a public servant who lived with courage & conviction.
