Strange week this one. Just had the second bloke threaten to kick the shit out of me in five days. And they're not even Brexiters.
First on Tuesday, when this guy was abusing a beggar on the Tube, then turned on me when I intervened. Good times.
Second this morning when I see a crying woman and a guy shouting behind her as I walk to the tube. Tried to check if she was ok.
Those situations are really hard. I tried to speak only to her and avoid contact with him, but he's hyper aggressive, hand on throat, threatening to kill me etc. He's quite robustly not being a decent chap.
I'd have had no chance against this guy. I wear pocket squares. But you know, doing an ok job at holding firm.
I keep asking if she's ok. She keeps crying, not looking at me, not responding, but also not taking opportunity to get away from guy. Bloke keeps pushing me around.
She calls him by his name - think she's his girlfriend - keeps on trying to get him to leave, says the police might come. That's the point I give up, when I realise her loyalty is with him.
But now I regret it. Of course she'll act that way. She's probably terrified of him. Maybe I could have tried to back away enough to call police, then offer her to stay with me while hopefully he runs. That seems an unlikely outcome to be honest, in every respect.
I dunno. These situations are basically impossible. You're making lots of social, tactical and moral assessments while a guy is swinging his fist in your face.
Anyone with good advice on trying to defuse these situations while making sure the potential victim is ok, and especially how to read whether intervention is warranted/sensible - I'm all ears.
Might call the police actually. See if they could check CCTV and maybe follow up to check she's alright? I have fuck-all expectation of that working, but worth a shot.
Police called. Doubt anything will come from it.
