Decided to see whether I could get some actual data on just how in love with himself John Bercow is. Turns out, I could!
This chart shows annual Hansard entries for each of the most recent Speakers, across their parliamentary career - ie how often they've spoken in the House
Turns out John Bercow has treated us to his wisdom some 34,593 times - very comfortably ahead of the pack
This data doesn't distinguish between Speakership and backbench career as they switched datasets in 2005 (you could work it all out, but life is too short). But it can show the difference between Michael Martin's last three years as Speaker (2006-9) and JB's most recent
In conclusion, the man is pretty damn fond of the sound of his own voice, and it will be a very welcome change when the rest of us no longer have to hear it quite so often.
One final stat that I forgot to mention - during his decade as Speaker, Bercow has spoken 21,174 times. That's only 3,000 short of what Bernard Weatherill, the next most prolix Speaker, managed over an entire 40-year career
One final final point. Some people have said 'Isn't this all down to recent events?' He obviously has ramped up his contributions - as shown here - but the average from 2010-2017 was still much higher than eg Martin.
