I know a lot of Remainers are feeling deflated and demoralised today. But here are two things the Opposition could do this week. Both of them could flatten the government.
1/ Vote of no confidence. Deal not approved. Gov wants election anyway. Give them one. DUP so angry could well vote with Labour- then EU will pretty much have to extend, as always said they would for new democratic event. Farage goes after BJ. Where does Tory majority come from?
Johnson has to defend a deal which does something he swore he’d never attempt. Labour goes all out for second referendum. Tories get squeezed by both Remainers and Leavers.
2/ Customs union amendment. This only lost by a couple of votes when Ken Clarke proposed it in indicative votes. DUP & all Labour would now support. Johnson can’t. And if he does, ERG instantly peels off. It is totally fool-proof, and post-Letwin can’t lead to accidental no-deal.
There is so much we can do to defeat government if opposition MPs are sufficiently resolute and coordinated. This isn’t even close to being over yet. Onwards.
