The desire to be loved and revered. By everyone

This desire is so overwhelming that it might even prompt compromise with truth and with one's principles

That's dangerous
Even the "Sabka Vishvas" slogan is less about trying to reach out to constituencies where the trust has been low w.r.t. the ruling dispensation

I am sort of OK with that.

But more personal. A desire to be loved by one and all
When this urge gets overwhelmingly strong, ideology and principles take a backseat

What predominates is a tendency to please.

Was browsing through Fukuyama's Origins of Political Order in a bookstore

A key thesis of his -

China has traditionally had a strong state, but a weak society

India the opposite

"It was the tyranny of cousins that allowed Indians to resist the tyranny of tyrants"
I found this a tad problematic

It is true that "social actors" have reined in the state more effectively in India relative to China

And that society has a certain resilience in India that is no doubt lacking in China
But I dont think it is right to call this the "tyranny of cousins"

Sure. jAti / caste is a big part of Indian society

But Indian society is hardly tribal in the same sense as say Pakistan

This glorification of Jodha-Akbar is greatly overdone

One is not even sure her name was Jodha. Which was likely the name of Akbar's daughter in law and not his wife

Akbar did have a Hindu wife of the Kachwaha clan, who was Jehangir's mother

But we are not 100% sure what was her name. She is known mostly through her Persian name "Mariam-uz-Zamani"

While it is claimed she remained Hindu, we do have a tomb for her in Agra
There is also a mosque built to commemorate her by Jehangir in Lahore - the Begum Shahi mosque, one of the older structures in the city

To what extent does the path dependence of events cause us to take the "status quo" as inevitable?

Did Jairam Ramesh support bank nationalization as a sophomore in IITB in 1970?
We tend to take a certain state of affairs as "unchangeable" and make all sorts of arguments to keep it as-is, because of inertia

E.g. Many people who in principle may dislike the idea of Europe, would've voted "Remain" in the Brexit vote

Because it's too hard to change things
So the position is -

Hey...maybe the idea of Europe was wrong to begin with

But we are in it now...it's too difficult to get out of this mess..

So let's keep it as is.

Some lesser known fact about #Modi to a common man.

Modi took birth twice, first on 29th Aug1949 as per his fake degree & second on 17th Sep 1950 available in public domain.

He sold tea at the age of 6 years in Vadnagar railway station.

But Vadnagar only had tracks passing through it, the actual railway station was built in 1973, when Modi was 23 yrs old.

He was underground during emergency, but did his graduation from Delhi University in 1978.

Everyone loves SpaceX, and thinks of Elon as the genius founder that invents new types of rockets that are cheaper, faster, more efficient.

It's fun to think of it as SpaceX versus NASA, or Silicon Valley vs Aerospace.

But let's talk about D&I, and logs. Logs as in timber. 🌲
If you've seen my talk on D&I, then you are familiar with under-matching: a phenomenon where bright kids from rural areas don't pursue intellectually rigorous careers.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity is not.

Under-matching affects white folk too.
Stanford research shows that with minor intervention, you can connect under-matched kids with the opportunities to reach their potential.

A guidance counselor, college advisor,or mentor, can put a person on the right path.
