For my ancient art+myth class, I asked students to experiment with ancient hairstyles, makeup, clothing, or recipes. Grading this assignment was a joy - just look at this two-tone chignon! (Used with permission.)
FYI here's the assignment prompt: "For ancient women, making sure that they played the gender roles reinforced by mythology was hard work! Think about the everyday life of women in antiquity. How were their days different from those of New York City’s women today?...
...What questions do you have about the lives of ancient women? How did they apply makeup, style their hair, put on clothes, or cook themselves lunch? Find a topic that interests you, and either do research on your own, or click on one of the links below....
...Then, use things around your house to imitate the style, clothing, food, or other aspect of the everyday life of ancient women. Take a picture of your results, and write a post of at least 50 words in which you post the picture and explain your process...
...and include a few questions about the everyday life of ancient women that you thought of while doing the assignment.
And here are the links I included:

FYI this is an online class. I love taking advantage of the opportunities teaching online offers to ask students to do things that would be hard to accomplish as classroom activities, like conducting their own research or, now, making omelettes and togas :)
