I hope and pray that, when the end came, it was a soft and beautiful death, as she wished.”

My grandmother, racked by declining health, chose her time of passing.

When it came, it was not a shock.

She had long since told her family that she would spend her remaining good days with them and then choose when her life would be complete.

Anyone who has watched someone close to them wither away in pain in a prolonged end of life knows the tension that exists between the wishes of the living and the solace of the sufferer.

It is hard to let go. When the person is in great and worsening pain, it is cruel not to.

Death with dignity for the terminally ill should be a legal right here.

It is so profoundly hard to accept the concept of a loved one willfully shortening their days.

Once you’ve seen harrowing final days though, it’s barbaric to not afford people that choice.
