Donny Deutsch wouldn’t last a week doing the types of work my aunts and uncles have done, and yet my uncle died because he didn’t have insurance. Please get a grip on actual reality.

My driver from the airport today, of course not knowing who I am or what I am in town for, in giving a verbal tour of Springfield, casually tells me, "Of course, there are parts of town you don't want to be caught in at night."
I grew up "those parts of town," I choose to live in one of those neighborhoods that white and middle class folks were warned against, and I write about the kids who live there. So, this was my welcome to Springfield. I hope you all are ready to get this work tonight.
(Was also an interesting indicator of class assumptions that some folks put on "professional" black people.)

So, I’m reading this book about Clarence Thomas that argues he is a black nationalist, and, well, I am...perplexed.
He is conservative, clearly, and typically black conservative. But I’m not sure what definition or understanding of black nationalism one would have that would make Clarence Thomas one.
Even when Elijah Muhammad courted white supremacists, he was doing so from within a black organization around the common cause of race segregation. Nothing about Thomas, from his marriage, to his career, to his political affiliations to his words point to black nationalism.

Remember anti-immigration, anti-gun control talking point at the start of 2018 (based on a very small sample at the start of of the year) that London had more murders, and was now more dangerous, than New York? Total murders for each city for all of 2018:

NY: 289
London: 132
The number of murders in New York in 2018 (289) is the lowest number since the 1950s, while the number in London (132) is the highest in a decade. Bad numbers for London, of course, but NY's lowest murder total in 60 years is still more than double London's total.
If you want a good example of how NOT to use statistics in journalism, the 2018 London/NY murder story is it. As year-end numbers show, discussing "murder rates" based on just 2 months (Feb/Mar) was sensationalist and useless, playing into a number of far-right talking points.

NEW information on Simona Papadopoulos and her shady background: I've found evidence (and have spoken to people who have confirmed) that she has used at least 2 aliases, dating back to at least 2010. The cover story for at least one of these aliases makes very little sense.
Lara Stara - Facebook posts confirm that Mrs. Papadopoulos used this name in 2014 and 2016. Sources: facebook.com/photo.php?fbid… and facebook.com/photo.php?fbid…. One friend wrote, "Lara Stara...I cannot tag her." Another friend responded, "She will be looking for a new identity..."
I spoke to Paul Wiffen, a former UKIP member who is directing a film where Mrs. Papadopoulos is playing Brigitte Bardot. He confirmed to me that she used the stage name "Lara Star" for the same role in 2017 as referenced here on the IMDB page: imdb.com/title/tt435490…
