Out now! New preprint on the effects of repetition on performance in sequence production
biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Work with Danny Kwon and @DiedrichsenJorn, @diedrichsenlab.

#tweeprint in thread below 👇
@DiedrichsenJorn @diedrichsenlab 1/5. When trying to master a motor skill, we tend to practice repeating the same movements over and over. Indeed repetition benefits have been shown for single, point-to-point reaching movements.
@DiedrichsenJorn @diedrichsenlab 2/5. Here we used a discrete sequence production (DSP) task to ask whether this also applies to movement sequences, and which processes (planning vs. execution) mediate such effects.
@DiedrichsenJorn @diedrichsenlab 3/5. We found repetition benefits for entire sequences that cannot be explained by repetition effects on individual sequence elements.
@DiedrichsenJorn @diedrichsenlab 4/5. Further, improved performance appeared to stem from an enhanced ability to combine sequence elements into skilled behavior via online planning – planning future elements while executing current elements.
@DiedrichsenJorn @diedrichsenlab 5/5. Finally, we present some evidence that actual practice with sequential movements may be more effective than mental rehearsal for reaping the benefits of repetition.
