The core is the "iCNN" module, which takes (decoded) CNN features as input and generates an image whose CNN features are similar to the input. Optimization is done either in the image pixel space or in the GAN-derived low-dimensional space.

A thread about this Nature advice column about how female scientists can combat gender bias - To be clear, I'm incredibly grateful to the women in this piece. The advice is clear-eyed & I definitely got some ideas. But I am also really tired of being told this is MY problem 1/n
to solve. Let's start here: Ladies, you need to somehow address the problem that you are SIGNIFICANTLY under-represented as editors, reviewers, & last authors. nature.com/articles/d4158…. Here's the preprint they're talking about - biorxiv.org/content/early/… 2/n
Here's another thing we #ladyscientists are supposed to solve from that paper - manuscripts with female last authors were significantly less likely to be accepted (50% versus 58%) when the reviewing panel was all-male.

Big Q: How are cortical areas specialized across the human brain?

An important axis relates to sensory-association cortical hierarchy. Anatomical hierarchy is conventionally measured by invasive tract-tracing, so inaccessible for human cortex. What's a usable proxy measure?
The noninvasive MRI-derived T1w/T2w map is a good candidate for a hierarchy proxy measure, as it exhibits high values in sensory areas and low values in association areas. There's good homology between human and macaque, for which anatomical hierarchy can be measured.

Thread: A picture is worth a thousand words, and your brain needs billions of neurons to process it. Why do we need so many neurons? To find out, we recorded thousands of them in mouse visual cortex. Here’s some data, and a link to the paper:

2. One reason to have so many neurons may be that they each have different jobs:
Neuron A recognizes the pointedness of a fox’s ears,
Neuron B recognizes the color of the fox’s fur.
Neuron C recognizes a fox nose,
etc
3. When enough of these neurons activate, the brain as a whole can recognize a fox.
