So because all the stuff about Samhain being touted about across the airwaves etc is basically a pile of rubbish...
Let’s go back to basics shall we and start calling the day what it should be called...The Feast of Mongfind.
Who?
Well...
According to c11th C The Death of Crimthann, Mongfind was a powerful witch Queen who is said to have died at Samhain.
Of what?
She died from drinking poison in a cup which she had wanted her brother to drink and so die and then her own son could become king. Her bro became suspicious though and MADE HER DRINK IT
Bastard
Pretty standard scheming queen trope behaviour but with Mongfind...
...something else happens and she is said to have become very popular with ordinary women who loved her power and her efforts to do what was right by her own son.
Prayers were offered up to her and the feast became known amongst the people as the Feast of Mongfind
She is variously depicted as a royal figure, a powerful witch and also a banshee.
Depictions of powerful women were often tempered with supernatural elements. Mongfind the witch queen’s festival has been overtaken by the myth of Samhain now.
#RememberTheWitchQueen
But I say...if we’re going to give over a day to a festival of spurious origins, based on a few literary refs then...MAKE IT ABOUT THE WITCH QUEEN
Thanks
