1/No climate plan is credible w/o a meaningful plan to reduce driving.

Electric vehicles aren’t enough.

We must invest in transit & reform land use to allow more housing near transit & jobs.

2/“US needs to electrify its vehicle fleet & significantly reduce driving by 2030 to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius. In CA, even a tenfold increase in electric vehicle sales would still require residents to drive 25% fewer miles each yr to reach emissions targets.”
3/To be clear, this transition to a society where people drive less can’t just be about *demanding* that people drive less. We have to make it *possible* for people to do so. That means massive investment in transit, accompanied by significant density increases by jobs & transit.

1/13 A group called “AIDS Healthcare Foundation” - a pariah among #HIV advocates - is a chain pharmacy & insurance company masquerading as a nonprofit.

AHF opposes #PrEP, funds anti-housing NIMBY groups, & uses HIV healthcare funds for politics.

AHF has zero credibility.
2/13 AHF & its bully CEO Michael Weinstein are obsessed with abusing HIV healthcare funds to attack me. They first went after me when, as an SF Supervisor, I stopped them from scamming SF chain store rules to open a pharmacy: suing me & dumping big $ against me in my Senate race.
3/13 AHF/Weinstein are now going after me again, b/c of my housing work. They hired an investigator (thru their anti-housing front group “Housing Is a Human Right”) to dig up dirt & slander me. They’re running TV ads & sending out mailers attacking me for #SB50, #MoreHOMES Act.

1/5 Today I’m announcing new legislation (#SB378) to create a California estate tax - taxing estates greater than $3.5M. The federal estate tax exemption used to be $600K & is now an obscene $11.4M ($22.8M for a married couple). Estate tax is perhaps the most progressive tax.
2/5 The proceeds of the CA estate tax will be dedicated to reducing wealth inequality. Estate taxes reduce dynastic wealth accumulation. The proceeds will help create wealth in communities that historically haven’t had it, e.g., funding savings accounts for low income children.
3/5 Our proposed CA estate tax exemption of $3.5M is the same as existed in President Obama’s first year in office (2009), the same as proposed by Hillary Clinton in 2016, & the same as proposed this year by Bernie Sanders. thebalance.com/exemption-from…

2/4 LA Times: “Continuing to preserve single-family neighborhoods as they were decades ago would have left vast swaths of the city unaffordable to many buyers, hostile to new approaches to transportation & still segregated as a result of racially discriminatory housing practices”
3/4 LA Times: “There may be debates over exactly how radical the changes to the status quo should be, but it’s clear that single-family neighborhoods can no longer be sacrosanct. Not if cities are serious about increasing the supply and affordability of housing” . . .

At today's SANDAG Transportation Committee we had a discussion on individuals preference to widen freeways. I understand the desire to reduce congestion BUT it is important to note what has been learned and how widening freeways can actually INCREASE congestion. #InducedDemand
To get an understanding of the potential negative impacts of freeway expansions can do we can look at the I-10 “Katy Freeway” expansion in the Houston metro area. One of the widest freeways in the world. It was widened to a whopping 26 lanes at a cost of almost 3 billion dollars.
All of this was done with the goal that the freeway expansion would alleviate traffic congestion. After widened, congestion got worse. Houston’s traffic monitoring agency noticed a 30% increase and 55% during the evening commute between 2011 and 2014. It was an expensive failure.

First, where did Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan plan come from? (George Soros, perhaps? Foreign-funded radicals?) No. It came from Albertans. A volunteer panel led by @andrew_leach spoke w 1K residents in-person and heard from 25K+ online. 2/24
The panel also engaged with 350+ stakeholders and met w Aboriginal Peoples in three cities, and received hundreds of detailed submissions from NGOs, industry groups and others. 3/24

Kicking off with land use: Our report says fundamental reform to how land is used and managed is needed to deliver the UK’s climate goals. There is now a unique opportunity to define a better land strategy that can tackle the challenges of #climatechange. Read the Exec Summary.
Significant changes in land use could help reduce emissions by 35-80% by 2050. Figure 2.5 explains. Deeper cuts in emissions by 2050 require ↑↑ tree planting & peatland restoration, while the harvesting of biomass could help to displace emissions in energy & construction.

If @velometro classified as bikes they can be in bike lanes but you couldn't park these at a bike rack. Lots of policy issues to be worked through. #TRBAM #bikeshare (?)
Traffic operations questions created by low-power vehicles that aren't quite bikes. If they operate (maybe in general motor vehicle lanes) + you want smaller vehicles used for urban delivery + working for bike mode shift, what happens? #TRBAM #LEVs
