In a recently published paper, researchers use “an LCA approach to calculate the Long-Lasting #CarbonSequestration (LLCS) of #seaweed, which can be understood as the difference between #CarbonFixation & released C throughout the life cycle of seaweed.”

🧵1/9 ImageImage
Using kelp (Laminaria japonica) as an example of seaweed, the present study “validates the procedure of calculating the LLCS of seaweed throughout its whole life cycle in Ailian Bay from nursery to processing into #biochar (fertilizer) as the final product.”
2/9 Image
The results showed that “the #CarbonSequestration (full life cycle) of kelp in Ailian Bay was 97.73g C /m2/year.”

📢New paper on planting #hedgerows for climate change mitigation

How does #hedgerow planting contribute towards reaching #NetZero?

We looked at hedge #biomass and #soil carbon storage and UK planting rates

thread ⬇️ Image
1/9 First, a look at hedge planting numbers. We used @NaturalEngland data for planting and gapping-up in public schemes (#CountrysideStewardship &co)

👉 5265 km of hedges have been planted in 2004-2022
👉 2.6 times as many hedges were planted in 2019-2022 compared to 2004-2018 Image
2/9 But we need to plant more! To be exact, we need +193,000 km in England to meet the goal set by @theCCCuk for #NetZero

How much CO2 would be stored in these new hedges?

at @SoGLeeds we measured aboveground #biomass carbon stock and sequestration in hedges of different ages Image

Why is this sign in Romania important?
Because it hides the lie.
The lie that burning trees for energy is good for the climate.
The sign says "Our most precious value is nature. Let's take care of her."
See thread below to find out what's behind it.
@SteffiLemke @lgewessler

Behind the sign above is a pellet plant.
Stacked in the yard are giant piles of trees including massive old trees, ready to be crushed into pellets.
The EU calls this renewable energy.
The sign said to take care of nature. This is not care, this is abuse.
@Heunicke @RobJetten
These trees are not by-products, they are targeted to be logged to make pellets.
Without incentives, they would still be alive in a forest.
This is a scandal.
Tomorrow, Wed March 29th, EU leaders can help stop this.

EU Member States are negotiating renewable energy incentives these days, and in particular whether they should end current market incentives for using wood in the energy sector, as these are driving the destruction of forests in Europe and abroad. A thread. #biomass
Two recent investigations showed that even primary forests are crushed into wood pellets. Billions of euros in public funds reward energy companies for burning wood, which creates an enormous incentive to log more.……
And a new criminal case in Italy just shows how bad things can go: 5 biomass plants have been producing electricity out of wood mixed with waste, asphalt… and never double-checked their suppliers’ paperwork stating everything was cool and sustainable!…

New briefing from Griffith University in #Australia argues that a major shift to using forest #biomass burning for energy comes with grave risks of highly perverse outcomes, including increased CO2 emissions and negative impacts on forest integrity.…
A rethink of the role of forest #biomass burning for energy in national decarbonization policy is therefore urgently needed. Forest #biomass is not clean energy because burning it releases CO2 emissions and so does not contribute to a decarbonization pathway.
The emissions from burning forest #biomass are instantaneous, but their removals from the atmosphere are not and take a long time. This means there is a significant time lag between when carbon is emitted and when it is removed and stored.

I recently finished a report ”One Billion Tons – CO2 emissions and a Faster Coal Exit for Germany.” This is a thread of the key points and findings. Report was commissioned by @oekomoderne and done by our non-profit think tank @think_atom 1/n

The remaining nuclear reactors, or #GER6, avoid roughly 60 million tons of CO2 per year. To date, the early, political closures since 2011 have released an extra 500 million tons of CO2 (and much more in the future) as fossil fuel production has been kept running instead. 3/n
