A short thread on Italy and racism in 2019.

Italian footballer Mario Balotelli was racially abused during a match in Verona this weekend. The abuse is clearly audible in this video:
This morning a Verona ultra and member of a neo-fascist party said Balotelli "isn't fully Italian", and repeatedly used the n-word in interviews (repubblica.it/sport/calcio/s…) and on his social media profiles
The response from the football association is likely to be the usual (very little), while politicians, ranging from Verona mayor to the man who would like one day be prime minister and his party, are incapable of condemning what in 2019 should be pretty straightforward to condemn
There aren't isolated incidents. Chants aimed at Lukaku at Cagliari earlier this season were deemed not enough in "size and perception" to warrant action. The third time the club was investigated in 2 years and let off. bbc.co.uk/sport/football… Lazio has incidents at most matches
Also this weekend, during a match between 10 year olds, a player was racially abused by the mother of another player, who shouted the n-word milano.repubblica.it/cronaca/2019/1… - Italy has a racism problem in football and beyond, and is failing as a country to deal with it.
