Texas Elections Thread #txlege #tx2019
On the ballot tonight: 3 special elections for the State Legislature, the Houston mayor's race, and 10 statewide constitutional amendments. Also a ton of municipal elections (both candidate and initiative).
Of the 3 State Legislative seats on the ballot in Texas tonight, 2 are safe D seats (Dallas and Houston) and the third is a formerly solid R seat that was narrowed to 4 points in the 2018 election (Fort Bend county, a Houston suburb). #txlege #tx2019
Early vote in Texas #HD28 shows the sole Democrat, @ElizMarkowitz, leading the field with 38%. There were six Republicans in the race, the next closest are at 30% and 19% #txlege results.enr.clarityelections.com/TX/Fort_Bend/9…
@ElizMarkowitz Texas #HD28 will go to a December runoff, and it won't be a "gimme" for the R's. December runoffs are unpredictable and Democrats are highly motivated. Will be a fight to the finish! #txlege
@ElizMarkowitz Also on the ballot is Houston mayor's race, incumbent Sylvester Turner (D) garnering 48.19% of the early vote. Needs 50% +1 to avoid a runoff. Twelve candidates in the race, two conservatives combining for 42% in early vote #tx2019 harrisvotes.com/ElectionResult…
@ElizMarkowitz Back to those #txlege seats... #HD148 is a safe Dem seat in Houston, but had 15 candidates (12 Dems). Headed to a December runoff, likely a D vs. R match. harrisvotes.com/ElectionResult…
@ElizMarkowitz The third #txlege special election tonight is #HD100, a safe Dem seat formerly held by @johnson4Dallas who was elected Dallas Mayor last spring. All candidates are Dems; Lorraine Birabil leads with 40%, three other candidates jockeying for second and separated by 54 votes.
@ElizMarkowitz @Johnson4Dallas Texas had 10 State Constitutional Amendments on the ballot tonight.

Prop. 1 fails. Would have allowed candidates to run for multiple judicial positions (a thing in rural areas where the bench is thin, no pun intended). #txlege

@ElizMarkowitz @Johnson4Dallas Texas Props 2-8 with huge leads:

2: Water Infrastructure bonds
3: Exemption of property tax after disaster
4: Banning state income tax
5: Money for state parks
6: Money for cancer research
7: Money for schools
8: Flood infrastructure fund

#txlege
@ElizMarkowitz @Johnson4Dallas Texas Prop. 10 has 93% approval, and allows for adoption of retired law enforcement animals (like K9s) by their handler or authorized agency without cost. #txlege
@ElizMarkowitz @Johnson4Dallas Prop. 9 is a little weird, and the only one that's even close: allowing for a tax exemption of precious metals held in a precious metal depository in the state. It's currently at 53-47. #txlege results.texas-election.com/races
@ElizMarkowitz @Johnson4Dallas City of Austin elections: Props A & B failing early.

Prop. A - originally an initiative to stop the MLS stadium, it wound up as a measure to require public votes on changes to parks.

Prop. B - an attempt to require a public vote for convention center expansion.
