A brief rant/explanation thread. I love MedTwitter. I feel like this is my hospital away from the hospital full of friends and colleagues. Lately however, I have felt the need to step away due to the anger surrounding APP and physician roles/nomenclature....
2/ I’ve know that I wanted to be a doctor since I was a little girl. I worked extremely hard to get through my undergrad while also working full time and also to get through medical school. Getting accepted to medical school was one of the proudest days of my life.
3/ I love taking care of patients and I love learning as much as I can. I also love the feeling of getting called “doctor” because to me, it is the culmination of all of my hard work and is literally my dream come true.
4/ However now I’m being told that if I want to be called doctor and not provider, that I’m arrogant and obviously don’t value anyone else in the health care team. This could not be farther from the truth.
5/ I think that there is room for everyone at the table and that we should work together as a physician-led team to provide the best care to our patients. I do believe in a physician-led team. I’m told that this is arrogant and short sighted as well.
6/ So now I’ve found myself getting angry. Angry at people that I don’t even know. Angry that the role of physician will be disintegrated in exchange for APP providers that can be churned out quicker and for less money. I don’t want to be angry. I want to love my medical team.
7/ I’m going to be protective of my title and of my chosen profession. It does not mean though that I look down upon other members of my team. It does not mean that I think that your voice and the care that you provide isn’t important. It just means that I love being a doc ❤️
I mean, I used to refer to APP’s as midlevels because that was the terminology that I’d been taught. A couple of great NP’s told me that felt derogatory to them so I stopped. NBD. I didn’t accuse them of being arrogant. This is so weird to me.
Also I would have paid more attention to spelling and grammar if I’d have known that this would get so much attention 😂😬😳
