White evangelicals support f/ Trump is not just transactional (give us judges & we'll put up w/ you).

Rather, white evangelicals are thoroughly populist, like Trump: xenophobic, Islamophobic, racist, nativist, authoritarian, w/ predilection f/nastiness.

So as James Guth shows us, we have may need to put a pin in any hope that anti-populist evangelicals who hope to shift the course of white evangelicalism are going to see any success.

And we definitely need to underscore that religion is raced (see @PennyEMN & @gbyukich's forthcoming work: nyupress.org/9781479808670/…).

White Catholics & white Mainline Prots look a lot like white evangelicals regarding populism.

I was led to Guth's paper via @davidrswartz great piece from the Anxious Bench. Definitely take the time to read.

As he points out, 2016 just revealed the notion of a coherent evangelicalism (claimed by either side), is a fiction.
