1. So just a year ago Bill Kristol predicted that Nikki Haley would emerge as an anti-Trump political force. How is this analysis holding up?
2. Far from becoming an anti-Trump counterforce, Haley has in fact become an ardent defender, preparing the way to become Trump's successor.
3. Haley, like almost all elected Republicans, has decided not just to accept Trump as the standard bearer but also to accept that the party is going to be Trumpized from here on. To stay on the good side of GOP voters you have to be pro-Trump. More here: thenation.com/article/haley-…

1. Part of the drama we're seeing today and on Wednesday is the inherent tension between a professional civil service and Trump's desire for for personal control of government ("The United States, c'est moi")
2. The grounds for impeaching Trump are that he used the office of president for corrupt ends. That's amply evident in the hearings. It's worth distinguishing Trump's corruption from the more proper authority a president has over civil service.
3. The American national security establishment is non-partisan but that doesn't mean it's non-political. It has a very strong institutional agenda. You don't get into this line of work if you aren't committed to a robust version American global hegemony.

I'll simply note that after Epstein's death, I published a piece calling for independent investigations of his life and demise. My tweets referenced the fact that in the absence of such an investigation, some bad actors are exploiting popular suspicion. thenation.com/article/jeffre…

1. I'm gutted by the news that Tom Spurgeon (who had a presence here as @comicsreporter) died unexpectedly at the age of 51. Tom was one of my favorite people in comics, a presence in my life as long as I can remember, a fine critic and advocate for comics.
2. I guess i first knew Tom as editor of The Comics Journal, later as maintainer of the essential news site Comics Reporter, co-author of very smart biography of Stan Lee, and co-compiler of a really fantastic oral history of @fantagraphics
3. Tom was a man of many many trades as an interviewer, reporter, convention organizer and even, for a few years, comic strip writer. But he was, above all, a fine & discerning critic. He loved comics & wrote about them with a rare acumen. We we so lucky to have him.

Yesterday I pointed out the astounding, overnight propaganda success of "Hamilton68," the secretive group created last year by Bill Kristol, Marco Rubio's guru, CIA officials & Dem hawks that the US media, almost daily, uncritically uses to shape headlines. Today's NYT front page
In 12 years of closely watching the US media, I don't think I've ever seen a propaganda effort succeed as quickly and spectacularly - and be as uncritically venerated by journalists as Gospel - as Bill Kristol, Mike Chertoff, & Mike Morell's "Hamilton68." It's impressive & scary.
