Self promo alert. Feel free to judge me.
Ok, so our new ad for Kotak is out. (If you haven't, here it is. Every view counts.)
Everyone is raving about how @RanveerOfficial nailed Kapil Dev's body language. I want to tell you why I'm not surprised. +
As you can see, it's a single shot. Crammed with dialogue. And actions. And split second timing. Not easy.
Unless you're Ranveer.
Except that when he walked into the set he wasn't Ranveer. He was a second generation Parsi Hotel Manager, down to his last toenail.+
He went behind the reception desk, and just owned the space. Like he spent all his life there.
He had already mastered his lines with a Parsi accent coach.
He had studied the takes of the stand-in actor.
He was ready for rehearsals.
First take - 67 seconds. Couple of glitches.+
He chats up the co-stars. Adjusts a few words and actions with Rajesh Saathi, the director.
Next take. 62 seconds. Near perfect.
P.T.Usha is mildly nervous. But she knows how to anchor a relay. She has done it so many times for India. +
Ranveer and Usha check each take after it's shot.
We ask if he can scrape off 2 seconds.
Sure, let's go, he says.
Next take - 2 seconds shorter.
No kidding. +
We were worried the script was over-written. Too many words, too many actions, too little time.
But Ranveer embraced it all. And integrated it into the persona he created.
He made each joke work - istri geography, balle balle, start up. (Not many got the cello joke though.) +
So when I saw Ranveer executing the perfect Nataraja shot that Kapil made famous, I wasn't surprised. I'd have been surprised if he didn't.

But we have a slight problem now. What do we do next year?

Promo over. Thank you.
