The greatest fallacy about living with Diabetes is that you have to be eating ONLY BEANS, PLANTAIN, Moi Moi🤦🏽‍♀️🙆🏽‍♀️! Reason why most are malnourished!

Real ‘Diabetic Diet’ is;

“Eat every healthy food. Add more vegetables. Just in fist size portions per meal.”

Patients coming to our diabetic clinic are always asked to come with their relative or care giver.

They need all the support they can get. While we don’t advice patients taking refined sugars, we however advice they have some of these drinks closeby in case of HYPOGLYCEMIC bouts
Hypoglycemia is simply a drop or more below the normal body sugar level. Severe hypoglycemia can kill faster that hyperglycemia ( seem in diabetes).

So in these attacks, patients might be sweaty, drowsy and even faint. So if there sugar level is tested and is low...👇🏽
A sugar drink can help revive them while you try to contact a Dr or take them to the closest hospital. These are complications to look out for and another huge reason why we ask every home, esp diabetics to have a Glucometer for regular checking of their blood glucose level.
Now about the diet, yes... we are as interested in both foods with low sugar as we are interested in low calorie density.

Type 2 diabetes mostly has to do with insulin insufficiency. And when insulin is insufficient, break down of sugars is SLOW. So most pile up in the blood.
Hence, our advice to patients as much as you love the food you’re eating, or think it’s a ‘safe diabetic food’, our interest is in making sure you eat little at a time. So you don’t over work the insufficient insulin, which will cause blood sugar to rise and which is dangerous.
So, the best way to eat. Fist 👊🏾 size portions of food per meal. It is better to eat small portions of food 4-6 times a day, than an ‘Adult dose’ of food twice a day.

Care givers and relatives, don’t discriminate food for them. Give them the good food you eat too, just rationed.
You can’t change these risk factors of type 2 diabetes;
1) Age above 45
2) Positive Family history
But you can change these;
Overweight, abdominal obesity, sedentary lifestyle, eating habits and smoking.
Your lifestyle choices can prevent this or at least greatly delay its onset.
Don’t forget to check your blood glucose level today.
If normal, repeat monthly. If diabetic regularly, daily as adviced by your Dr.
Take care of your loved ones. Don’t forget whether garri, fufu, wheat they are same sugar
Unripe plantain swallows are good. Eat in small portions

Now, Dr Chioma, does this mean beans and plantain is not good?
Excuse me please;
1) Reread the first tweet slowly. Emphasis on “ONLY”. Eat, but not only.
2) Beans and plantain is my best food and so I won’t be caught talking down on it.

Be safe.
