The value of having a good lawyer: In 1926 George Bernard Shaw did not want to take the £4,000 prize money attached to the Nobel Prize for Literature, because Alfred Nobel had invented dynamite and patented it in 1867. George Bernard Shaw did not want to receive what he regarded
as the proceeds of warmongering.
George Bernard Shaw was told he could not have the Nobel Prize unless he also took the money because under the will of Alfred Nobel, anyone who refused the prize-money was regarded as refusing the entire award.
No doubt with the benefit of good
legal advice, Mr Shaw advised the Nobel Committee that there was nothing to prohibit him accepting the Nobel Prize and the money, and having received both, then returning the money, which is exactly what he did 93 years ago today on 22 November 1926.
