On 13 December 1955, 64 years ago today, Grace Gifford Plunkett died in Dublin aged 67, having been a widow for 39 years. She had married Joseph Mary Plunkett, who was due to be shot by firing squad, in Kilmainham Goal in Dublin Ireland, on 3 May 1916, having persuaded the
military authorities to allow them to marry. She and Joseph, one of the leaders of the Irish Rising, were married in the chapel of Kilmainham Gaol, a few hours before he was shot by firing squad for his part in Easter Rising. They were allowed @ 15 minutes together as a married
couple before he was shot. She is the subject of "Grace", a
1985 song written in 1985 by Frank & Seán O'Meara, which became popular in Ireland and elsewhere and has been recorded by many musicians including Jim McCann and more recently by Rod Stewart.
