Had a fabulous weekend with my sister who was visiting from out of state. She brought dozens of family photos that she is cataloguing. My paternal great grandfather and grandfather were photographers. This is a photo of my grandmother at 17.
There are a series of photos of my grandmother as a teenaged flapper in the late 1920s. It's fantastic to have this history and pass it on to the next generation.
And then there are the fun pics. Me with two of my nieces and one of my nephews. This photo was part of a poster made for one of my niece's bat mitzvah. We had been baking cookies at my house and then the kids found some sunglasses...what a delight they were (and still are!!).
And how is this for adorableness?

Bloomberg is a true billionaire and has always made his tax returns public. He's called on Trump, who has never made a dime on his own, to do the same.
Bloomberg may not be the guy the centrists want--or maybe he is, but this is a serious run.
I'm with Bernie on the subject of billionaires, but Bloomberg is no Tom Steyer. Dismissing his run would be an error. He's in it to win it and while I don't see him gaining too much traction, I do see him shaking up the center and reshuffling the deck. We shall see.

black genealogical studies: trying to sort out what exactly determined a 'mulatto' listing on the federal census reports (pre 1960). the definition of mulatto (one white & one black parent) doesn't seem to quite be the case then. appears it was a blanket term for 'lightskinned'

1/ A photographic look at the Trump visit to University Medical Center in #ElPaso. He visited there after the 7th worst #massshooting in US history. Targeting #Latinos, the attack killed at least 22 and injured 26. Pictures from Dayton included.
2/ Trump is vilified by many in El Paso for his border war, and his venom and prejudice appears to have helped inspire a white nationalist to target Latinos and commit mass murder. He planned to visit hospitalized survivors, but none would meet with him. So, what to do?
3/ What Trump is accomplished at is flipping the script. In a remarkable cache of 40 pictures on its Flickr feed, the @WhiteHouse bombarded the media and social media with exclusive images of his #ElPaso visit after excluding the press from covering it.

*An Empty Boat* ⛵ A monk decides to meditate alone, away from his monastery. He takes his boat out to the middle of the lake, moors it there, closes his eyes and begins his meditation.
After a few hours of undisturbed silence, he suddenly feels the bump of another boat colliding with his own. With his eyes still closed, he senses his anger rising, and by the time he opens his eyes, he is ready to scream at the boatman who dared disturb his meditation.
But when he opens his eyes, he sees it’s an empty boat that had probably got untethered & floated to the middle of the lake. At that moment, monk achieves self-realization, understands that the anger is within him; it merely needs the bump of an external object to provoke it out.

'' Since you were kids, have you wanted for anything?'' he asked us.
'' No sir,'' we chorused.
'' Good. But do you know why?''
Confused, I turned to my siblings and matched their bewildered shrugs.
Papa said nothing for a while. He stabbed the floor tile twice with his staff, before looking up.
'' I asked a question.''
''No idea sir,'' I answered on behalf of my siblings.
He placed the staff across his laps and sank back into his favorite cushion.
The silence was deafening as we waited for him to tell us the reason for his summon. Papa who rarely commented on the family whatsapp group had dropped 'My time is near and I need you all at the Otuobi

My great-great uncle Leo's 1914 photo while in the Austro-Hungarian army in WWI. As a Warsaw Jew, he fled in WWII, but his wife and child were swallowed by the maw of the Ghetto, despite his continued efforts to get them out.
His flight was exhausting: he fled first on foot, with nothing but the suit he was wearing. He headed first to Vilnius, then Moscow, then Kobe, then Shanghai, then Johannesburg, then Lisbon, then London, and finally New York City, to live with his sister (my great-grandmother).
In Warsaw, he had owned five movie theaters and was married to the heiress of a banking fortune. In New York, he flipped hot dogs at a Nedick's. Easy come, easy go.
