STAR WARS: A MEANDERING NON-THREAD
It was Palpatine, it was always Palpatine.
Palpatine was the disciple of DARTH PLAGUEIS, the Sith who knew more than anyone about using the dark side of the force to hold death at bay—with the possible exception of the disciple who supplanted him, Darth Sidius/Palpatine.
What do YOU think the odds are the most powerful Sith ever AND the one with the greatest knowledge of how to used the Force to NOT DIE would die from being tossed down a shaft?

Pretty low.
"But Eve, the Death Star BLEW UP."

Yes, but force users can survive in space. Cf. Leia's Mary Poppins moment. And SHE was untrained.
We also know that Force users can survive death. Light side users, Jedi, become force ghosts. This seems to require a self-sacrificial death. The Sith don't know about this, because Vader was like "what the fuck?" when Obi-Wan vanished like that.
But the Sith don't DO self-sacrifice nor would they be interested in being mostly ineffective spectral advisers.

So, I submit, that the Sith have ANOTHER WAY.

Not a Force ghost, but a Force LICH.
Palpatine's plan was to turn himself into an immortal Force Lich, you see. And for that he needed a SACRIFICE. So he maneuvered Vader and Luke into a death duel.

He didn't expect Vader to turn, so that didn't go right—but Vader DID die after all, as planned.
Let us say the combination of the beating, the Death Star going BOOM, and Vader going off-script made Palpatine's plans ... not flawless.

He did become a Force Lich, drifting in space, but it took him DECADES to fully recover his power. But he HAS decades now.
He starts to reach out with his mind, more powerful than ever.

The Empire must have had a core and a frontier. He starts to build a force on the fortier to unite it, as the Rebels attempt to rebuild the Republic. This is where the First Order came from.
Who is Snoke, why is he so powerful, and yet so easily killed?

All part of the plan.
My SECOND supposition is that Palpatine can use the Force to "supercharge" another force user, even a weak and untrained one. Snoke is the governor of the First Order/Outer Systems, to whom Palpatine GRANTS Powers.
It's emphasized that Snoke and Kylo Ren are not Sith, just dark side users.

This is a lie. Snoke thinks Kylo is HIS apprentice, but he isn't. Kylo is actually Palpatine's apprentice, and IS a Sith. Snoke doesn't know this. Kylo is there to MANAGE Snoke, not SERVE him.
Kylo is very much like Anakin—VERY powerful in the Force, but pulled between the light side and the dark side.
Palpatine, or Darth Sidius, as a Force Lich, no longer wants to be emperor, but something like the god-emperor behind the emperor.

But he needs an emperor.
NEXT IDEA: Rey is nobody special? Just a badly written Mary Sue? Nope! She is Palpatine's daughter—or more precisely, his female clone.

Hear me out.
We know some are STRONG IN THE FORCE. That means there are many WEAK IN THE FORCE. Why not clone a hundred million of THEM?

Answer: Because you can't clone force users. Something about them.
But once again, Palpatine has Force Powers over LIFE. The cloners of Komino with the aid of Darth Sidius, and DECADES of attempts, do clone him. We explain the gender-swap because for some reason that's necessary to clone a force-user.
Rey's "parents" were her scientist-technician caretakers. They weren't related to her. She has no true parents. But she has, in a way, Palpatine. This sets up a kind of "*I* am your father!" moment. More on that shortly.
Rey is so ridiculously overpowered with no training whatever BECAUSE, unbeknownst to her, Darth Sidius has been "lending" her power—this is much stronger than with Snoke, since their biological connection allows him to SUPERCHARGE her, and share SKILLS.

Kylo is in on this.
So—and I am not a writer, just spitballing here—we get a scene where Rey confronts Kylo. She says something like "You can't beat me! You know who I am!" and he says "Yes, I do. But you don't!" Suddenly she loses all her power—except what she's earned through training, i.e. none.
Kylo is beating her ass with contemptuous ease. In her mind, she hears the voice of Darth Sidius telling her to embrace her RAGE at being so helpless, to tap into the Dark Side.
She does, and rage driven, suddenly it's a real fight again. Kylo is on the defensive but using all his skill, he destroys her lightsaber (and two of her fingers).

She is beaten and helpless. And something M-Rey Sue has never been: powerless. All she has is RAGE. Pure Dark SIde
Palpatine tells her she can remain a powerless, beaten, half-hand or regain her power by turning to dark side and joining him.

And leaves her to stew about it.
Where does this end up going?
