Hinduism is not a religion so much as a collection of related by varying religious schools of thought.
“Hinduism” itself is a European term.
It is more comparable to Greek Philosophy, with the established schools being the Academics, the Platonists, the Epicureans, the Stoics, the Peripatetics, and the Skeptics.
What I find puzzling is that the combination of such deep religious wisdom AND a multiplicity of schools at odds, SEEMS LIKE it would make followers of the sanatana dharma rather open-minded to other serious religious views.

Alas, it does not.
Hindu: Christianity is absurd!
Christian: How do you know?
Hindu: Because the only TRUE religious teaching is either Sankhya or Yoga or Nyaya or Vaisheshika or Mimamsa or Vedanta! I’m not sure which one is true, but it is DEFINITELY one of those!
Christian: Uh huh …
Christian: You kind of accept six schools of thought, or one of them, but you don’t really know, and yet you KNOW everything else is wrong?
Hindu: Well, if I am being honest, there’s a chance that Buddhism or Jainism or Cārvāka or Ājīvika are true, but probably not.

.@noelplum finds it “odd” that people think the things they think are true are true. To me this seems like tautology. What would be odd is someone thinking a thing they think is true not to be true. “You would think that because you do think that” supposed to be a gotcha, Noel?
@noelplum I’ve seen this line of argument crop up before, usually phrased as something like “Isn’t in CONVENIENT that the things you believe just happen to be the things you think are true?”
@noelplum As I always tell my students “Questions are not arguments.”

I think the suppressed premise here is “All human beings at all times attempt to conform reality to their beliefs, rather than their beliefs to reality.”

If so, it is a self-defeating position.

You give your game away when you have to stipulate something beyond “evidence.”

Someone: I believe X on the basis of evidence.
You: But is it TESTABLE evidence?
S: No, but it is evidence. That’s all I need to justify belief. That is what evidence IS.
There are many things which are perfectly well evidenced without the evidence being “testable.”

Each of us is conscious of the fact we are conscious and we are aware we are aware. The awareness of awareness is not only EVIDENCE we really are aware, but INCORRIGIBLE evidence.
No argument made to me that I do not exist can have any force, since I am directly aware that I do. I SEE DIRECTLY that I do; hence the VID in E-VID-ENCE.

And yet I cannot demonstrate to anyone else I am not an automaton or NPC.

Yet my belief I am conscious is FULLY JUSTIFIED.

This is not a thread about race. I'm going to use race as an analogy to make a point. I'm also going to use a censored form of a racial slur to make the point more strongly, namely n***er.

I would not use this term except in fiction or a thought experiment like this.
Suppose a white supremacist group declares their position is "anti-n***er." They then go on to make their position into a DOCTRINE, which they call "antin***erism." This is obviously the teaching of being "antin***er" (whatever that is—nothing good, surely).
Later on, white supremacism falls out of public favor. So the antin***erists decide, as a P.R. move, to say "Our doctrine of antin***erism isn't based on our antin***er stance! Look at the WORD! We are merely ANTI - n***erism."

This is such an important area and I'm glad that attention is being paid to #PupilExits.

That said, the EPI's definition of unexplained exit (UE) and the decision to rank LAs and trusts is, I think, flawed. (Thread)

UE is itself a very misleading term. It suggests that some explanation has been sought and found lacking, but what it actually refers to is a move that doesn't fit into a category that the researchers can measure based on other data... #PupilExits
...an address is an objective datum available from centralised records, so it constitutes an explanation. A parent not liking the new behaviour policy and taking Jonny to the school down the road is "unexplained" because this explanation can't be coded the same way. #PupilExits

Stepping back from the culture wars for a short thread on #Japan & #Religion. Believe it or not, this is my specialist area of research and as I finish up a new paper on the topic, I thought I would share some interesting results. Strap in!
The popular image of Japan & religion is something of a paradox. On the one hand, you have lots of pieces about Japan as a country of non-believers. This is usually based on survey data where only 10-15% of Japanese people self-identify as religious.
Indeed, we saw this exact pattern in data we collected from 1,000 Japanese respondents in 2016. When we asked whether they would describe themselves as religious, regardless of participation in religious events, we got the following responses: only 10% identified as religious.

Not a reader of @NicholasSparks but have watched several of his books as movies.

Tearjerkers for sure.

I'm a gay man that lived a life of fear, isolation, and quiet desperation from my early years on.
I probably would have benefited from a club that existed to say, "Whatever I might think about your sexual orientation, you deserve to be safe and free from fear in life."

And, honestly, I think that is what, in particular, Gay Straight Alliance Clubs are about.
Today, in schools that receive federal funds and that have a club forum or offer an opportunity for political, religious, or philosophical groups, formed by students, to meet, a rule prohibiting such #LGBTQIA clubs would violate the #EAA, the Equal Access Act.

Second: The actual experts do not agree with you, and your fear-mongering is likely causing more harm than good.
