[Star Wars games EA-era]
Thread: Some information you may not know about Jedi: Fallen Order.

Respawn's game will be the first SW narrative solo adventure since The Force Unleashed 2 (2010). That's almost 10 years. And this project deserves our full attention. Here's why.
In May 2013, EA partnered with Disney to release Star Wars games from 2013 to 2023 exclusively.

On june 2014, Stig Asmussen (creative director for God of War III) has joined Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment for a mysterious project.

On May 4, 2016 – Star Wars Day! – Stig Asmussen announced Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall 1/2) was making a third-person Star Wars game.

"We at Respawn Entertainment are honored to have the chance to contribute to that legacy."

Jedi: Fallen Order's team is a new Respawn team.
Apex Legends design director Mackey McCandlish: "Myself and others helped interview for that team just to lend some time to help it get off the ground. But I haven’t been heavily involved – it’s off to the races for them".
“The way we approach development is a game director-first approach. @VinceZampella gets Stig Asmussen in, he’s made God of War, he starts hiring loads of people for the team. The team tries different ideas, the team finds what resonates, a Star Wars opportunity appears."
@VinceZampella "This team continues to build up, get space, allocate, they start making that game, and they deliver that game ultimately".

@VinceZampella Why a new team?
For an expansion of the studio? In any case, Respawn has recruited developers who were able to drive the Unreal 4 engine. Note that the Titanfall and Apex Legends work with a heavily modified version of Valve's Source.
@VinceZampella You say: "I thought EA was putting DICE's Frostbite engine (Battlefront 2) on all of its studios." That's true, but EA bought Respawn only in 2017. Before, they "only" worked closely together. The development of Jedi: Fallen Order was already well advanced.
@VinceZampella In june 2018, @EAStarWars announced that this game would take place just after The Revenge of the Sith (Episode 3), during the Jedi purge.
As the "Darth Marvel" 25-issues Marvel comic book? Hell yeah!
(for me, the best recent SW comics, by far)

And you know Lucasfilm. There are HINTS because Star Wars is a coherent fictional world.
As explained Matt Martin from the Lucasfilm Story Group:

Who wrote the story?
We only know @ChrisAvellone participated. Chris who? One of the most famous authors of the video game, a former pillar of @Obsidian

@ChrisAvellone @Obsidian We owe him Star Wars: knights of the Old Republic 2 (2004), who despite his chaotic production, was one of the best interpretations of the license.

And he worked on Fallout 2, Fallout New Vegas, FTL or Prey.
@ChrisAvellone @Obsidian What about this 1st concept art?
We know that the hero has to hide to survive (like Kanan Jarrus from Rebels cartoon before him), and he seems to be doing archaeological research on a planet invaded by the Empire, where a Venator-class Star Destroyer of the Republic was crushed.
@ChrisAvellone @Obsidian You've seen this ship in Revenge of the Sith (2005) and The Clone Wars (2008-2014).
@ChrisAvellone @Obsidian Do we know more about the art direction?
Yes : the great @designergus was one of the artists.

He worked on Halo, Call of Duty, etc, but most of all, you've already seen his work for Star Wars 1313, the last cancelled LucasArts game (2013).
@ChrisAvellone @Obsidian @designergus f I remember correctly, he also worked on Project Ragtag, the canceled game (in 2017) from Visceral Games (Dead Space).

But also on the Vader Immortal VR series by @ILMxLAB ,which will be presented in a few hours.
@ChrisAvellone @Obsidian @designergus @ILMxLAB By the way, a book titled "The Art of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" will be published on December 31, 2019 by @DarkHorseComics

And the game's merchandise line will appear in Triple Force Friday, which will be held on October 4, 2019.
In 2016, we have seen a short making of, a video of motion capture work for the game.
In fall 2016, @VinceZampella ,CEO of Respawn, said to Glixel : “The Star Wars game is (...) going to be more about the character and their experiences.”

I hope so.

“It has to feel good. It has to play right. It has to be fun.”
You want to know more about the JFO’s beginnings?

During the production of The Force Awakens: "Stig and I talked about ‘wouldn’t it be amazing if we could do this Star Wars game?’ We talked to EA about it,”

Zampella: “Initially it didn’t look like it was going to happen, so we started creating an original IP with that team. EA came back, not that long ago, maybe a year or something, and said, ‘Wait a minute, maybe we do want you to do a Star Wars game.’ We were able to work it out.”
This means that the preproduction started in the spring or summer of 2015, and that this game will have benefited from more than 4 years of development (mid 2015=>end 2019).

For comparison, the Battlefront DICE were only 2 years and half production.
Finally, the only strange moment of this story was when the title was announced :)

That's all we have today about Jedi: Fallen Order.
We'll know a lot more tomorrow, and you can count on us to continue to tell the story, behind the scenes.

Hoping that for the first time since 2005 (KOTOR 2 / Republic Commando), a SW single-player campaign game will please me.
Let's hope that this Jedi: Fallen Order will be worthy of his legacy.
