Proof that wisdom comes with age:

In another room, I hear voices raised between my wife and our adult daughter...

... and I am not walking down there. Nope. I'm staying out of it. In fact, I'm crawling back into bed.

(Betting is now open on how long my resolve lasts.)
From what I'm overhearing, Wife (64F) inexplicably suggested to Thing1 (25F) that even sub-ideal employment might be a viable pathway to not living at home, +that selling the car we gave her to buy a gaming computer (+ lease a new car) might reduce her independence...
...which Thing 1 considers an emotionally harmful assault on her self-esteem as a competent, independent adult, and representative of a lifelong pattern of disordered parental communications.
...
Notes: 1. The relative merits of these contentions are complicated by Thing1's recent cyclothymia diagnosis, which explains years of behaviors. 2. Thing1's not completely wrong about communication patterns.

Now the yelling has subsided and I even heard brief laughter.
I hear both Wife and Thing1 laugh a little. Wife to Thing1 as she leaves what had seemed a Chernobyl-like scene of unthinkable terror: "I love you!"

WIFE HAS SUPERPOWERS THAT I, A HIGHLY-TRAINED PROFESSIONAL MEDIATOR, CAN BARELY DREAM OF COMPREHENDING, LET ALONE POSSESSING.
Honestly, I'd value any constructive insight by those who are/have/work with:
1. Cyclothymia,
2. Negotiating the blurry boundary of MH issues vs garden-variety youthful numbskullery in adult children, +/or
3. Issues presented by the thread above that I'm not spottting.
