so u can sometimes guess where it goes by seeing if its like an English equivalent

fête ~ “fest”
fenêtre ~ “defenestration” (go out a window!)

fantôme "ghost" (from Latin phantasma)
île "isle"
conquête "conquest"
tempête" "tempest"

pâté just means PASTE

(sometimes it means another letter, but the S thing is such a useful predictor especially when you KNOW it has an English equivalent! DONT LOSE MARKS ON QUIZZES LIKE I DID)

i guess your high school French teacher probably never took Latin so they might not know this rather than being WILLFULLY MALICIOUS but we will continue to regard them with grave suspicion

when the quiz is before you and you wonder if it needs a hat accent:

1) is it making that a, e, or o sound weird?
2) is it like a word you know that has a missing letter there?
3) is it like another word that is spelled the same?
