Many pieces on Elijah Cummings are noting that his Hill clout brought resources to Baltimore. Worth noting, though, the fate of one of his last big gets, $900 million he helped secure for a rail transit line for W. Baltimore: Guv Hogan killed the project and gave the money back.
I asked Cummings about this at the time and he was in disbelief about Hogan's decision. "We’re talking about thousands of jobs,” he said. “It would’ve helped a lot of small businesses. But more importantly, it would’ve helped people get to work."
Cummings also worried about residents. “It was devastating for people trying to have faith in govt. A lot of these people had never spoken to each other before they started working on the line. They became friends, they worked it out. Next thing you know...They don’t understand."

this extremely good article is a case study in how “meritocracy” is utter nonexistent bull, and “affirmative action steals from worthy students” is just a racist dogwhistle not borne out by reality.
a student who wants to become a doctor but comes from a low-income family faces thousands of dollars in hurdles just to get accepted. then, if they’re able to secure loans and scholarships, they’re still facing daily stresses affluent—and mostly white—students don’t face.
this includes sleeping in cars, eating the cheapest and likely non-nutritional food available, forgoing treatment for serious medical problems because they can’t afford a hospital bill, and all the psychological problems associated with living day to day while impoverished.

The SAT & ACT cost ~$50. About 20% of students use a fee waiver.
The MCAT costs $315. 7% of test takers use a fee waiver.

So many low- and middle-income students are being removed from the pool of potential doctors before they even take the MCAT.
In 2017, more first year med school students came from the top 5% of parental income than from the bottom 60%.

– Tillerson, Perry, Pompeo, Sessions, Haley, Ross, Price, DeVos and Zinke. The network’s ALEC undermines state laws across the country – things like abortion rights, union rights, and environmental protections.
He undermines college education across the country, by funding reactionary professors. His Federalist Society is destroying Federal courts at all levels, including Kavanaugh and Gorsuch. He helps fund the NRA.
