1 in 5 people will experience a diagnosable mental illness of some sort in 2020. 1 in 4 will have one at some point during their lifetimes.

For some, mental illness is a single episode at a particularly difficult point in time. For others, it is a lifelong burden.

Bipolar disorder affects ~2% of our society. It's characterized by marked fluctuations in mood, from high (mania) to low (depression). Some people become psychotic if the mood episodes are severe enough. But that doesn't make them scary.

Today, on #GivingTuesday, America is grappling with what generosity really means.

Old certainties are crumbling. New ideas are taking hold.
As everyday giving has decreased and plutocratic giving has soared, Americans are pushing back against the use of giving as a smokescreen to cover up misdeeds and system rigging.
We used to be more uncritically grateful about giving by a Bezos, Zuckerberg, or Sackler. Now, more and more, we remember to ask: How did you make that money? How have you kept so much of it? What choices did we collectively make to prioritize that keeping over the public good?

1. Stopped A.G. Barr from stripping asylum seekers of the right to seek bond;
2. Halted a nationwide expansion of fast-tracked "expedited" deportations.
3. Preserved the right to seek asylum for people subject to metering.

4. Filed the first lawsuit on behalf of parents seeking to hold the government accountable for family separation;
5. Had the first-ever FOIA class action certified, in a lawsuit challenging delays in providing vital evidence.

As recently as the last #GivingTuesday, the conversation we had about giving was very different. In this moment of the #techlash, phony billionaire populism, and existential threats to democracy, there is a spreading recognition that giving back is not going to save us.
"Philanthropy is commendable," the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary."

That is the mindset we should bring to #GivingTuesday.
